How do you know when eggs are ok to eat?
I have about 15 ducks and every so often, I find eggs here and there. I would love to have fresh eggs, but have no idea how long they have been out, or they are even safe to eat. So you guys with fowl, if you don't check for eggs everyday, how do you know if the stray egg is good to eat?

If I could lend you my dog I would. He found some duck eggs that had been dead (rotten) for quite some time and rolled in them. OMG the stench was incredible. Good luck on your quest

If they float, no good. Any questionable ones we find in a corner or in the yard, we crack into a separate dish as to not ruin whatever we’re making.

The float test, as stated earlier if they float, gasses are building up inside...not pleasant to crack one of them open.
To extend the life of good eggs, don't wash/clean them, they have a protective membrane on the outer shell that will be washed off. |

Although you can "candle" them (hold them up to a light to look to see if there is a mass (chick) inside) or float them to see if badly spoiled...the best bet is just to collect them daily.

The nose knows. Crack one and before you pull the shell apart give it the sniff test

Air inside from rotting bacteria.
Also a hard-boiled egg or very fresh egg spins smoothy. An older egg with more liquid-y whites allows the yolk to shift to the outside and wobble. (or so I've heard.)

Knowing what "some" dawgs will eat ... I would never trust a dog's sniff test! We're having poop and rotten eggs for breakfast

Spin like a top? Very interesting. Now I will try these tests on eggs I find. I hope my ducks don't get mad at me. Thanks, guys! Hope I don't crack open a stinker!
