I Fought the Law and ...
I WON!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1574275693.jpg It was a gargantuan effort. Literally dozens of pages of documents and at least 10 back-and-forths between me and the IRS, but I won! There's going to be some celebrating tonight! |
Ah great! Now you pissed them off for the rest of us!
|
Congrats on your victory!
I just wish we could get by with 80,000 plus less pages of garbage. Flat fee or better yet no income tax at all - pre1913. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_taxation_in_the_United_States |
Satisfying feeling, isn't it ? The only time we were audited, we walked out with the gov owing us over $2K :^)
|
The first full year I was in business, we were audited. I had to buy a new printer, scanner, and fax machine, and went through two reams of paper, and toner cartridges. Lots of records printed and organized. My CPA charged a nice hefty fee, and we had the auditor meet at his office. He provided her with a huge stack of every receipt for every item. I spent the best part of two weeks getting everything organized.
She spent a couple of hours looking at it, and took a copy I prepared for her. A few weeks later, they decided everything was fine. They did find one thing I had done wrong, and it would have meant we owed about 11 bucks. They did the math and decided the 11 bucks was less than it was worth to refile so they decided to ignore it. So that 11 buck error on my part cost me two weeks of effort, and a new printer, and a big check to my CPA. I do have a neat color laser printer-scanner-copier-fax machine out of it. |
I have owned this business since 2000. I have been audited twice in that 19 years.
Both times they discovered a mistake that resulted in them writing a check to me. IIRC - $500 the first time and $1200 the second time. They stopped auditing me after that. :D |

According to a CPA I knew, State Auditors were much harder than those from the IRS...

Not sure if this is just urban legend or not but I've always heard claiming part of your home as a business expense puts you in the fast lane for an audit.
|
I beat them for 19k they said I owed them:D
|
You mean they didn't call you? I mean I get like 4 calls a week from the IRS and they're always telling me I'm going to jail if I don't respond.
|
I am counting this as a win...I know a man that won.

That exemption went away last year. Can’t do it at all now. |
Nice work Patrick! Bet that made your whole day to get that letter in the mail!

When I say I fought - I fought! Backstory: Eight months ago I got a love letter from the IRS saying I owed them a bit of money - enough money to buy a nice G50 Carrera and a set of new brake drums for my Speedster. I took it to a tax attorney, gave him $500 and two weeks later he told me I was screwed and better just write the check. I was thoroughly pissed off and started a hate mail campaign with the IRS. They sent me letters, I sent letters back - for months. Over a period of 4 months I sent them two separate tranches of documents and an excruciatingly detailed explanation. Each one took a couple of days to assemble and was over an inch thick. I lived with this low level stress for six months, waiting to hear from them, being pretty sure I was screwed, but hoping there was a chance. Now this! Yep, made my day - my week - my year! |
Great news but I've now got that song stuck in my head.

Thanks for that...

Congratulations!
When I built my house with a construction loan, the lender sent me a 1099 for a $100k partial draw after closing. The IRS came and wanted their share. After a year of back and forth, the incompetent lender finally sent a corrected 1099 to the IRS. Case resolved. Phew! |
