Painting a 64 Int'l truck - which paint to use?
I think it's a 1964. If not, close.
Painting just the cab on this beast. The nose piece winch assembly and flat bed will be removed. Anybody know what the original paint type was? I want to paint it single stage urethane with hardener in the original red color. Not intended to be a show vehicle. Just a decent job. Push-back/thoughts welcome. ![]() ![]() ![]()

My guess is original was enamel. Now banned by the feds. I didn't know urathene was still legal. Was under the impression it was all water based these days..
Cool truck!

No problem with urethane here in Akron. I can still buy 22 line Glasurit but won't for this truck. Maybe UNO which I think is BASF but wide open to suggestions. Kinda thinking the base paint is more important than the color paint.

Thanks! Excited. Owner bought it for $750 (family purchase) and promptly dropped $800 on new tires.

Have not even looked. Here's a pic but I'm not even sure it's the same truck.

Can't go wrong with mutiple-layers of single stage. Sand and polish it 'till the cows come home.
It needs to be on top of thoroughly cured sealer-primer, on top of rust fix. Spring might be a better time unless the weather changes. It's supposed to be an early winter this year. |

Don't know anything about paint. But I do have the sister to that with about 32k miles sitting in the willamette valley just down the road from Paul.
Great rig. Rebuilt the carb a year or so ago and it runs great. Grandpa bought it new! |

Yeah, that looks handy to use the winch, would be a keeper, maybe paint it with bedliner
I almost had to buy one like this at an auction of old California Dept of Forestry vehicles. I think it went for like $800, old and fairly immaculate. I should have gone, they had a couple of rigs that would have been sweet, but I didn't really need a truck ![]()

I’m watching this thread. I’m thinking of painting my ‘65 VW next summer. Been thinking about single stage urethane.it will be interesting to see what you come up with.

https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/pricing UNO is RM brand. I have maybe shot it once. I usually use RM Diamont - BC/CC - unless on the cheap and then BASF LIMCO.

Sweet truck what motor and trans does it have ? I say keep the flat bed it's a great look , useful and easy to work on/around . That front bumper is awesome , it looks like a built in deer stand !

I had the pleasure use shooting PPG 2021 clear a few weeks. Pricey but over-reduced, it is stunning.

My paint rep turned me on to these industrial coatings. Less than $120 per gallon last time I bought it.

Bob - That truck is not a '64, closer to a '67-'68 I'd say based on the grille. Dad had a '64 Travelall back in the day.
