dumb question
1. Iris has found some dinosaur bones and a fossil footprint. The length of the footprint is 40 cm, the length of the thigh bone is 100 cm, and the length of the body is 700 cm.
A. Iris found a new track that she believes was made by the same species of dinosaur. If the footprint is 30 cm long and if the same ratio of foot length to body length holds, how long is the dinosaur? |
I am pretty sure it is a ratio question, 2/35?

Pictures of Iris please.

WD.. She is discussing how to aim headlights here.

If track to length is the same:
To get the multiplier from the first track compared to body length 40cm x N=700 cm N=700/40 N=17.5 To get the second, substitute 30N=length 30cm x 17.5 =525cm |

I got 525 also. Usually Fint and I getting the same sum would mean that he made a mistake along the way, I think he is right here. The length of the thigh bone length is irrelevant and is meant to distract your attention. The ratio of footprint length to body length is 40 to 700. If you divide 700 by 40 you get 17.5, meaning the body length is 17.5 time the foot length. So 17.5 time the new length of 30 equals 525.
There’s an even shorter solution that confirms that 525 is correct. The new footprint size of 30 is exactly 3/4 or 75% of the original footprint size of 40. So, the new body length is exactly 3/4 of the length of the original size. .75 times the original length of 700 equals 525. Crusty is also correct. 35/2 equals 17.5. |

Thanks for the answers. My answer was also 525, just wanted to confirm it.

I also have a stock answer for an abstract question. An example being Me "When is the network going to be back up!" Them "How long is a piece of string?" Me "1.2 meters. When is the network going to be back up!" |
I'm still learning how to adjust jeep headlights.

oh my, I was just going to say with a title like "dumb question" this may be the most viewed thread.
I did not know math was involved. I am just going with the easy answer of 10% less, 630. but then I just saw a thread about someone needing a size 19 shoe for their son. so if footprint to size holds true to everything then his boy must be around 10ft + from young Frankenstein: "he would have an enormous schwanzstucker" |

Could be worse, they could be trying to buy condoms for the boy. |
