How did my iphone do this?

My BIL texted me this morning while I was still asleep. He asked if I wanted to go hiking this morning. I woke up an hour later, went downstairs, checked my iphone 5C, and saw that I had a text from my BIL. I read it, and saw that there was an answer already there. (It said, "totally".) It hadn't been sent yet.

But how did that answer get there? No one in the house did it. Bluetooth was off. I'm pretty sure we have no ghosts. BTW, my real answer was no, since I'm busy with something else.

You replied to an earlier message and never hit send.

Happens to me all the time

I couldn't have. The earlier message was one hour earlier while I was asleep.

What he's saying is, the last message that he send when you were awake and aware, you typed "totally" and never hit send. You could get 10 more messages after that and the "totally" will still be sitting there waiting for you to hit send whenever you get back around to it. So "totally" could have been waiting since the previous night, prior day or 3 days ago, whenever the last time you got a message when you had your phone in your hand, read whatever he sent and thought "totally"

Correct.

Could also have been voice record.

I regularly hit the voice record icon by mistake and often have entire conversations transcribed ready to send.

That must be it. I thought the sequence would be preserved in the order written. It must have been at least a month ago when I wrote "totally", and the old thread was deleted, so I can't see what I had responded too.

So it can't be a hack?

Not a hack.

One of those technical glitches that generally occurs between the keyboard and chair.SmileWavy

That, my friends, is diplomacy.

I woke up at 2am the other night to my iPhone screen shining bright and Search open. I never use search. Sometimes I go to bed with a full charge and it's down to 40% next morning.

If anyone ever gets a text from me:

"totally"

....then my phone has been hacked :)

Same for me.

Gnarly dude, is another phrase I am unlikely to use.

Do you have another iDevice using the same Apple ID and have been set up to receive messages from the same number?

That won’t sync inputs across devices.

As in type on one and don’t hit send and it propagates across devices.

Doesn’t work that way.

Ghosts, they are a thing.

Probably a cat ghost.

If ya haven’t heard, curiosity is a leading cause.
