Need Acid Reflux friendly dinner ideas!

My son has a hiatal hernia which causes extreme acid reflux from time to time.
He's struggling this week and my wife and I can't think of any good dinners. He's a bit tired of Chicken dishes. Can't really have anything with tree nuts because of allergies.
I'm considering oven baked fish with veggies for tonight but need some more ideas. I'm open to Vegetarian... whatever... Just need some good ideas. Have to be careful with garlic, onion and spices have to be mild.

Let's see what the brain trust has!

Fish is a good plan. Baked potato. Pasta with white sauce.

While not a direct answer to your issue, a great tip from my doctor: Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice
They take licorice and remove the part that raises your blood pressure. If you hate the taste of licorice then not a good tip. That stuff works wonders, and is delicious. I eat some after each "dangerous" meal, kills acid reflux and is way more natural than pepcid !

Sadly he's beyond that. With the hiatal hernia it can hit him like a ton of bricks even when he's taking a daily Rinitidine. He's supposed to have another appointment soon with the specialist. I'm talking to my wife about discussing the possibility of surgery to correct the hiatal hernia with the specialist. He's 17 years old and the specialist said if they didn't know better they'd have thought they were looking at the esophagus of a 40 year old. I don't want him to fight this into adult life where it makes him physically sick when he has an episode.

I picked up some white fish that I'm going to bake in the oven with light seasoning. I have butternut squash, zucchini, egg plant, yellow bell peppers and small red potatoes that I'm going to cube and heat in the oven with olive oil, sea salt and pepper for the menu tonight. I'm going to try and go very light meals for the next week or so to see if I can help the poor guy feel better.

Don't forget smaller portions. If it's as severe as you make it sound, he's already taking some sort of acid blocker/proton pump inhibitor, and he's had endoscopies that document significant esophageal changes, then a lap Nissen isn't a bad way to go. It isn't just a matter of physical discomfort, but there can be cancerous risks, as well.

Keep it white.
Fish , rice and pasta.
Maybe not the bell peppers.

I’m certainly not a gastro expert, but I was taking Zantac (ranitidine) and Pepcid Ac (famotidine ) with minimal results, and switched to Tagamet (cimetidine) with complete relief .

Good luck to your son.

Exactly. I have struggled with AR most of my life. I have been taking protonix 1x a day for the last couple years, OTC stuff for many years prior. Recently had endoscopy done with result finding of Barrett's esophagus...

I have modified my diet by reducing the food and spices I eat at dinner and moved that meal at least 2-3 hours prior to bedtime. Still get an episode, reflux up throat and sinus cavities, now every couple months which is miserable and takes a few hours to dissipate.

I am now on the schedule for an annual endoscopy - with my annual insurance deductible that pencils out to almost $4K OOP year for just that procedure.

Well aware... and it is. Worries the hell out of me sometimes. He was on a prescription med (my wife knows the name) and then the specialist backed him down to 300 mg ranitidine. He'll be monitored due to a higher risk of esophageal cancer.

Have to look at what my doc had given me for this.
I only take it on an as needed basis and the doc was good with this approach.

Had to look, Protonix (Pantoprazole) is the heavy one I mentioned. It got the symptoms under control to where a 300mg Ranitidine made things better but he still has flareups. The problem is, the flareup doesn't just last for a few hours but rather for days where he'll feel nauseated or will actually be vomiting (not fun). He was checked for B.E.

On the dinner front. I made the white fish and veggies. He was less than pleased. His words "I'm just not a fan of this kind of food". I get what he's saying. I've had my own bouts with A.R. Not easy going from "meat and taters" to chicken, fish, turkey and veggies. I'm going to buy a few cookbooks to see what I can find for good recipes.

look into the surgery...
down the line and in time the refluxs becomes ulcer...
ulcer becomes misery...
misery ruptures and resection or routeing of his gut is next...

Yeah. It doesn't do much for him. Nether does the 150mg Ranitidine. I'm trying to change his thinking on what he eats because I know a good healthy diet can be a game changer for him.

I took ranitidine and it didn’t help me at all. I take pro tonic and I can eat anything no prob now. I took omeprazole years ago but had to stop because I had a kidney transplant and it could damage the transplanted kidney supposedly.
Good luck because it is a life altering issue and I feel for you son

I have fought this the last 30 years and hate to hear this about someone so young. My issues started in my 30's.

My suggestion is eat as clean as possible (mostly plants) and eat big early in the day. Best for me not to eat after 3 or 4 pm. Go to bed on an empty stomach. The other advice is to elevate his bed at least 4" at the headboard. Early dinners and an inclined bed has been a game changer for me...

I've been trying to get him to eat several smaller meals and avoid snacks after dinner but he's a teen so he listens to everything his parents say.

Last year when he was diagnosed we bought him a queen size wedge designed for people with GERD that goes under the mattress. He has done well but has had two really bad flareups in the last few months. We're trying to impress upon him the need to stay vigilant and take his daily pill... but again he's a teen so...

Thanks for all the advice.

A year ago, I was finally done with my AR problem that came and went for years. I radically changed my diet to no sugars, no grains. I went from guzzling pepto at 3am to completely healed within three months. Sugars in all their forms are the enemy. No rice, no pasta no bread. My inflammation is completely gone. Lost weight.

consider what he drinks, how much and how late he eats along with how much.

I have noticed when I drink milk at night I have problems when I sleep.
also how much I eat along with time.
I am a bit over weight so my wife says that doesn't help me.

try bigger meals at lunch and something light at night.

just a thought
