Electric? I’m not there yet...the idea of electrifying an old sports car just leaves me cold...even clammy. I haven’t “woke” to that yet.

Nick, we’ll see how this one does with 150bhp - no, not a whole lot - from a proper Porsche motor. I don’t plan on selling my SC. If it’s good, maybe you’d like to come sample it?

I see your hatch struts are period correct ;)

That said, if you replace them, there is a good chance the new struts will stress the frame, helping the rear window to (further?) delaminate.

Racer, after some research on this, the struts I've procured to ameliorate the issue you describe are those specified for a Jeep Wrangler tail hatch; we'll see if they have just the right amount of oomph. In the meantime, the oak banister rod remains.

Also, since these photos were taken I've replaced this hatch (with its larger 944 spoiler) with one from another 924S that was being parted-out, so the car now has the correct and more svelte appendage.

I owned my 198.5 944 for over 12 years and ended up selling it to my mechanic with 365,000 miles on it. I brag about that 2.5 engine all the time and the fact that I only had to replace a head gasket during ownership. Although just about everything else was replaced, that G50 tranny and engine being the heart of the 944 were great. The 85.5 had the updated interior with that electronic AC/Heat electronic control panel in the dash. This was an expensive replacement at the time, but now it appears 944 parts are plentiful.

I have owned three 911's in the course of my 45+ year Porsche ownership and the 944 stands out as the best in comfort, best in highway driving and wonderfully balanced on the back roads. The 944 does however, have weaknesses that still keep the Porsche shops busy that new buyers should be aware of. Failing oil cooler (if the dipstick shows "chocolate milk" their is antifreeze in the oil which can score the engine bearings), the fluidized motor mounts fail and flatten requiring updated turbo mounts, the cooling expansion tank will warp over time from excessive heat, the power sunroof relays will fail, the A-arm ball joints will loosen, the shifter will loose its "C" clamp and come off, the torques tube bearings will weaken creating high vibration, the electronic fan motors will fail, timing and drive belts require changes (every 30K), the front engine seals will leak, rain water will weep down along side the fuse/relay box and eventually rust your drivers side front floor board, etc, etc, etc..............................

Always wanted a 944. Had a 914 and started looking for a 944 when I sold that but I had my hands full with the 911. Wouldn't mind a 968 either.

I have always loved the way a 968 looks. Especially the 968CS.

My brother and his son have two '44's that they're rescuing. So far they've gotten pretty good at doing the belts and clutches. They're getting them cheap and having fun bringing them back from the brink.
I'm pretty sure your car is painted with Glasurit paint and it will respond better to rubbing if you use a machine on it. Not only will it save you time, it'll probably take off less paint too if you do it correctly. That paint needs the heat generated by the machine to really come alive. Trust me, btdt. You won't believe the reflections if you do it that way.

I've had several.
Still have a 944S sitting in a warehouse up on jack stands under a cover about 400 miles away, and a base model I've raced in SCCA's ITS class sitting in a hangar at the airport.

Yep. I also split driving duties with a fairly pristine '87 951. It is entirely different than the '85 Carrera, but it's an absolute blast to drive. It's tight, balanced, and incredibly nimble. I'm always kind of blown away by the contrast in overall refinement between two cars only two model years apart.

If you like 944s and 968s, let me present the best of those worlds--a 944 with a 968 engine. Whaled on it for 14 years, from Watkins Glen to Seattle and many places in between. Sold it to a guy who is still racing it in Canada.

I used to spend all my time on 944 tech, but rarely go now as I don’t spend near the amount of time I wish I could on my car these days, and it’s mostly sorted at this point. I’ve found there are a few really active Facebook groups as well that have some good resources too.

They are super fun cars once you get the mechanical bits sorted.

I had a 944S in my past and I liked the chassis , good handler and loved the rear hatch/room for storing stuff . I didn't like the snapped timing belt after only 8K miles :( . I wonder how the chassis would perform with a healthy Honda or Toyota four cylinder in it ? Light weight , should fit easily and either are drop dead reliable and can be modified for good power .

Good hearing from you - You help me allot with my 944. IMO. you benchmaked the LS swap. How all is well with you.

I might qualify as I have owned two 931 (924T), a 944, and I still have my 88 924S.
