I just renewed my wife's BMW registration at the super market at a vending machine/kiosk. God bless America. :):):) A far cry from years ago in California when they all expired at the same time. The line would go back and forth in the DMV building, out the door and around the building.:confused::mad:

Blah, DMV charges a 2.1% processing fee to renew online.... I just go to AAA and get it taken care of

... outsourced to an external company.

Hmm. I have the opposite opinion of the CA DMV.

I used to renew registration online. But this fall, the DMV started charging extra for that convenience (hey, it's convenient for the DMV, too). It wasn't a problem when I renewed Mrs. Noah's registration at the end of summer, but apparently it is now. Well, the DMV doesn't really charge extra for online renewal, but they tack on a small surcharge to offset the credit card fees. But unlike property taxes, they don't offer an e-check option to do online transactions without an added surcharge.

So being a cheapskate, I mailed in the renewal + check a couple weeks ago, thinking that should be adequate time for them to receive the mail, and cash the check. But nothing ever happened. So yesterday, with my deadline looming, I made the dreaded trip to the DMV and the clerk confirmed that according to the computer system, no renewal had been received/processed. To avoid being delinquent (triggering late fees) I wrote another check, and when they both get cashed there's a form I can fill out (and send in) for reimbursement.

Clerk blamed the slowness to all the processing of Real ID's. She said it now takes 1.5 months for snail mail renewals.

Ive been doing on line in Indiana for years. Just did the Cayman and truck last week. Painless. I can even get my drivers license on line every other time.

I tried the DMV web site for two days and it wouldn't work.

Online for years. No fuss, no muss. Got all the registration cards and stickers in the mail within 4 days!

The DMV in Augusta is next door to the nearest Publix. I go on a Wednesday and get the 5% senior discount at Publix and use a CC at the DMV to get Amazon points. No CC fee at either place.

Unfortunately, the OTHER DMV, where I have to go to get a DL renewal, is way out on the south side and not very friendly.

I tried that. Just make sure to send it in 1.5 months before the deadline. Shoulda gone to AAA.

Stink, around here it's the same price as they don't want you going in and talking to a human that they have to pay.

And I'm loving my car being 40 years old. I get classic registration that is about quarter the price of the usual registration. I guess that's because 40 year old classics don't get driven very much :D

Got my renewal last year for the truck. It just went over six years so it said smog check needed. I paid the day I got the notice online. received my tags a week or two later, no check. Odd, but not complaining.

In Oklahoma they privatized tags and registration with "Tag agents" that have a regular office hours, and they just get a piece of the cost, same amount for any agent. They actually try to be pleasant, helpful, and fast since the customer can go to any other agent they want. There are 5 or 6 of them withing a few miles of me. Many dozens all over the city, and thousands all over the state.

I usually wait until I will be going past one at lunch time. I stop in and pay the 21 bucks for a tag renewal with a check, and I am out in 5 minutes or less. The tag agents do the driver's license and the other tasks done by the DMV.

Our DMV in Illinois is still stuck in 1975. They don't accept incoming mail and there is no mechanism to buy a new car out of state.

AZ has me at 900$ on a two year old truck. :o

Well, CA is at least $200 for any car, regardless of how old it is. :eek:

I have some friends in tx that said it's a flat 100$/yr.

I saw a 918 the other day in old town. New mexico plate. He wasn't going to pay the $10,000 az registration on it.

My '57 Isetta is $125 (but still, point taken - that's a lot for that little car)

Try $1,000 for registering my 2019 Winnebago, I might drive it 5,000 miles/year and mostly not in CA.

My Batman handles all that stuff for me.
