I'm not so sure the EVs or hybrids belong there. Built into their new car price is a sizeable Federal and state tax credit that reduces the first owner's cost.

Mercedes AMG cars. I bought a 2009 S63 AMG with 40k miles for less than a third of new price. And when I sold it in 4years with 84k miles, I took a 50% loss. Car was still in perfect condition inside and out. I'll never buy another mercedes in my life unless I win the lotto and don't care about money anymore. The value of these cars fall like a rock the minute they leave the dealership and they never stop falling. With the exception of the one 500e from 1994.

The biggest surprise was the Acura RLX. It's not a car on my personal radar, but the Japanese luxury cars always seem to hold their value pretty well.
Not surprising at all was the Maserati Quattroporte - they've been depreciation monsters from day one.

We have had it almost 2 years now and love it. It has needed nothing after putting 40k miles on it. It has 65k total miles on it now. Just 1 set of tires for $600. We love not buying gas. Hands down one of my best car purchases. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

We bought a 2014 Volt that listed at $35995 for $26000. The $7500 tax credit made it $18500. You can afford to sell well below MSRP when you buy in at 1/2 MSRP.

Being patient and watching for cars (and other things) which stand the test of time for reliability, engineering and styling shifts a person's perspective on depreciation.

There is a small list of Mercedes cars that are good investments. SLS, SLR, 1950s Gullwing, 94 500e....maybe a couple more that i can't recall right now. The rest of them are equivalent to household appliances.

I think German made pass cars are a deal right now. I had a 2016 C300 CPO Benz, 20K mike car that stickered at $51k and I bought it for $26.5.
My reasoning: no one wants cars, it is all about UTEs, trucks and SUVs and the other is maintenance costs after the car is out of warrenty.

The AMG Mercedes are on another level as far as depreciation.
They are awesome cars as long as NOTHING goes wrong. One of the main problems is parts cost. Something is always breaking on them and when parts costs, even used, are sky high, all the DIY in the world can't help. |

I've seen deals on i3s where if you qualified for the BMW loyalty rebate ($2K at the time), you could lease a service loaner with 4-5K miles with an original sticker of $50K for around $190-195 + tax with no net cash out of pocket after you recover the tax credits. I sold my 2017 Volt halfway through a 3 year lease and put $800 in my pocket. I actually sold it semi-cheap to get rid of it, as I had gotten another car. My Chevy source could have sold me an identical new one 2018 for about $1,000 less than I sold my 2017 for with 16K miles, net of tax credits. The logic of a Volt or an i3 being a depreciation monster can be faulty, depending on the deal you get when new.

Almost any high-end car depreciates like a rock, except for the exotics. I bought a new Audi RS6 in 2003 and kept it for seven years. Didn’t put all that many miles on it, about 10,000 total. My cost to own it worked out at roughly 7 dollars per mile.

So.... Electric cars don't really depreciate massively, because both tax-payers and dealers/mfg's take a bath on them first? ...is that what is being said here?

I do know that I was offered $20K for my '09 Bullitt Mustang by a guy on the Bullitt board because of it's low (30K) miles and unmodified & undinged condition. I paid exactly $30,075 for it new, licensed and out the door. I figure it has lots of life yet, probably the rest of my driving years, so it's still in my garage. It'll never be a collector car, but it does seem to be doing better depreciation wise than many.

A co-worker was offered a fair bit of money over sticker for her PT Cruiser when it was new.
