Thinking of selling my carrera
So I’ve been contemplating selling my beloved 84 career 3.2 for the last 6 months. It’s my weekend fun car and I only drive it in the spring summer here in the northeast.
Not sure what a good replacement would be. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Last edited by Antomero; 12-17-2019 at 08:36 PM.. |

What is your motivation for selling?
Not enough seat time, cost, need for more power, want a more modern car??

I bought a '79 in '86. Like you, I only drive April-October. Early 2000's I was asked if interested to sell ... said yes, discussed price .. buyer passed ... still in my garage ... I am soooo thankful sale didn't happen ... not because of values, but because of how much enjoyment I continue to get from it. For Xmas I'm giving it a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46!

no car rewards one emotionally as much as a vintage car.
your the machinist, you have to actually "drive" it, all senses are alarmed, the smell, the sound, the feel! and even if you have an issue, it's emotional, because you care. this deosn't happen with a Prius...

definitely. I regret selling my 85 911, but had acquired 5 and retired. I would not have sold the 911 if not doing a total restoration on a 78 930.

I was thinking something more modern as a weekend driver. Either a 996 turbo or 997.2 4S.
But unsure like many of you have mentioned... how much I’ll regret selling the air cooled carrera |

sell it. drive a newer modern car. if you don't like it sell and buy another air-cooled car and you'll appreciate it more than before, or maybe not! you won't know until you try it.

imo. its worth a try. i started at 996tt. found it fast but sorta boring. went to a couple aircooled cars. loved them. then went to 997 gt3. really regret selling that. then went to a 19rs. did a ton of track days but boring af on street. sold that. to me you need one aircooled and 996 or 997 gt car. i personally am never buying a porsche made after 2011 again. so the jist is sell it if you dont want to own two. try a 996 tt. if you like it great. if not sell it. lifes short n there just cars.

Note that both of these cars are four wheel drive -- are you looking to drive more in cold / inclement weather? |

I guess it’s more the thrill of experiencing different P cars My daily is an inclement weather car and it’s fast enough for my needs. |

makes sense -- one thought -- you might want to consider first dropping money to experience the Porsche Track Experience in Birmingham, AL -- https://www.porschedriving.com/track-experience -- give you an opportunity to spend a few days on a FUN track driving a few different modern Porsches.
Had a great time driving 997s when I did it a few years ago, but left with no real interest in selling my '86 Carrera -- the experience really highlighted the difference between my vintage "analog" car and the modern "digital" 911s -- while not at all cheap, the Porsche track experience will give you a pretty comprehensive sense of the capabilities of modern Porsches without the commitment of selling/buying |

How does your 915 gearbox shift? My gearbox was refreshed by the previous owner 15k miles ago.
I have a small issue shifting into second with an occasional grind. And when shifting into 3rd quickly it nips the gear ever so slightly. Oh and 4th gear requires more force to get it into gear. Any thoughts? |

On another note, I sold my last air-cooled 911 about four years ago and don't really miss it. The roads here just suck and I felt terrible watching my 993 gather dust and cobwebs in the garage. If it weren't for the brutal summers and need for A/C here, I'd have kept my SC and sold the 993 before moving to AZ. But for now I'm fine with getting my need for speed out on an $8k motorcycle that will absolutely trounce any car on the road.

Are you looking for people to tell you to keep it?
If so, keep it. Or..are you looking for people to tell you to sell it? If so, sell it.
