Or, instead of driving a truck around, you could spend less than $200K on a very nice car and blow the other $ 1.5 mil on staff to bring your accommodations to you if there's no five star nearby.
I get the adventure Tourism thing. I see them pull into the Centre all summer in their custom built (often home built) campers on Mercedes or MAN chassis. They have been from the southern tip of South America to Alaska. Usually the next leg of the journey is Africa. Home sweet home is where ever they are.

Ever notice how all the motor home ads depict them out in the "open country" without any other cars around? Can imagine how fun it would be driving one of those big things around LA or the DC beltway! However, as they say, "there's a butt for every seat"!

My great aunt and uncle were mega RV fans. They wore out several rigs. They drove down to the Panama Canal, and all the way north to Barrow, Alaska. Hit every national and state park. They loved it. Power to them.

My idea of camping is no free breakfast at the hotel or motel. For 1.7 mil you can travel the world in a top of the line SUV or 4x4 and stay at 4 star hotels all over the world.

I remember back in the late 1970s an acquaintance bought a BlueBird motorhome. They spent over a million bucks on it. It had all sorts of bells and whistles. At the time there were very few million dollar homes in the city. A million bucks bought 10,000 SQ foot homes on 40 acres back then.

I've got friends who often go on multi-day excursions.
The big rig above may work in open territory like the desert Southwest, but it is way too big and tall to maneuver through forested areas.

I have seen a few in person - very cool rigs. All the owners I have met did admit they were difficult to navigate in urban spaces. Of course, their goal was also to avoid urban spaces as much as possible. Lots of areas in the Western US (and I'm sure in Australia) where that is still possible.

The depiction of the types places you see them in advertisement ads where there is nobody else around are mostly illegal to drive into.

If one lives long enough the "adventure" stage of retirement fades...unfortunately, in a too short period of time. Then the health issues and medical appointments begin to occupy your time.

When this time period begins, you'll discover that you need routine, You need to keep regular hours, take meds on time, eat and sleep on a schedule, all of it. You'll probably find a semi restricted diet also is part of this.

The time to "get your motor running, head out on the highway", has passed.

So, to those of you thinking of doing this, I'd advise to do it as early in your retirement years as possible, while realizing it won't last long.

I drive by the factory on an almost daily basis as part of my commute. I get my 30 foot toy hauler into lots of tight spaces in the mountains, getting that in would be a breeze.

The newer ones on the big chassis? I simply don't get it; however, I understand the appeal.

I love the "smaller" Earthroamers, they've figured out everything well (other than the small toilet canister), Would love to take one off the grid, but not at those prices
