Canadian Railroad Trilogy is one of the great songs of North America. A masterpiece. It powerfully tells the story of how we came to be.

I went to see Gordon for what is probably the last time 2 years ago. He was thin and weak and had, frankly, lost his voice. He did a lot of songs, which was great, but we heard him say to the band off mike, "I think I might have a trilogy in me tonight." The crowd went nuts, but it was not to be. He was just too weak. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian and American treasure. Thanks for reminding me.

Before the Canadian Railroad Trilogy and the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald there was the Ballad Of The Yarmouth Castle.

You might not find a recording sung by Gordon, but George Hamilton IV did a fine cover. In the biography of Lightfoot called If You Could Read My Mind, one of the band members said they were working on an album and Gordon came in with a newspaper article about the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He said he was working on a song. In the next session he brought in the music and they did the song in the first take. Best Les

As I said, G H iV recorded it. His album was released in '67. The Yarmouth Castle went down in '65. I suspect Lightfoot wrote the song shortly thereafter. Lightfoot did not release it on one of his albums until '69 as you state.

Here's a link to Hamilton's cover. The guy made a living in the '60s covering Lightfoot's stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c94UXXQpCm8 Best Les

Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald is one of MYleast favorite of his songs. Great story, but I don't like the plodding pace and the sound of that guitar repeating over and over.

Edited. I left out a very important word.

At the start of the movie "If You Could Read My Mind", Gordon and his wife are at home, watching old footage of him singing "That's What You Get For Loving Me". After a while he bursts out,"Turn it off! I hate that F...ing song!" Everyone in the theatre laughed. We were all thinking about changes in people's lives, I suspect.

^^^ No problem. I like the song because of the pace and guitar work...gives it such a haunting feel.
