Buffing Stainless With Handheld Tool
 

I need to re-buff some (polished but lightly scuffed all over) stainless steel back to a mirror finish. Normally, I'd use a bench-mount buffing wheel. However, the object is too big to lift and hold over a wheel. What tool do I need? Any brand or usage tips?

My buddy used my Dremel to polish a couple stainless guns. May be too small for what you are doing.

Try your cutting compounds by hand first. The oxidization (?) may not be that thick and doing it by hand may be possible and easy enough.

Otherwise a double action polisher with course then fine cutting compounds is my recommendation.

Try a die or angle grinder with cotton buffing wheels. You can use dry compound from Rio Grande or Maguires Marine Polish would work well I think. Use a dog hair brush to rake the cotton wheel to get it fuzzy.

Isn’t there an attachment that goes on the end of the bench grinder that gives you a flexible buffing pad? No air required and it’s much bigger than a Dremel.

Harbor freight makes buffing pads that can be chucked into a drill or one that can be mounted to an angle grind. Gives you several options depending on your need.
