Proper Sales Etiquette
Just wondering others thoughts.
I sold a hardtop yesterday. The guy traveled 3.5 hrs to get. He asked me about the condition and I said it had some scratches on the roof. Not bad enough I noticed when I bought and not bad enough that it bothered me to fix. I drove around for a week before even noticing. 20 year old roof, in pretty great shape. By the way, when I bought the guy told me it was in perfect shape. It close but not perfect. I never called the guy. Well they are faint dings not scratches so I worded wrong. My mistake. So the guy comes up, we install and he hands me the cash. Before he leaves he mentions the dings and ask me if they were there. I said yes, that how it came when I bought it. I tried to send pictures of the imperfections on Friday but unfortunately they didn't show the dings. The hardtop wasn't at my house (in storage) so I couldn't take pictures. Anyhow, he sends me a text saying he would have offered $200 less. Now if he had mentioned he was upset yesterday , I probably just would have gave him the $200 to avoid the bull of having to ship. I had a lot of offers but shipping was a problem. I've told him I will send him $100 and he can have a ding guy massage them out or just bring back for full refund. He's okay with the $100 back. What is proper etiquette? |

If the guy was bothered by the dings, he should have brought that up before paying you and installing the top on his car.
Giving him $100 back a day later, knowing he knew about them before he left the day before, seems generous. Hidden damage is one thing, buyer's remorse is another. |

I think you did the right and fair thing. You didn't have to, but you "split the baby." He traveled a long way and the description of flaws was a little off. The hardtop is 20 years old and you didn't tell him it was in the wrapper, so what could anybody expect? I'm not a fan of negotiating after an informed agreement is made, but some people are okay with doing it. He was probably just fishing for some money back after the fact, probably somebody suggested it to him. $100 is insignificant- you threw him a bone and can have a clear conscience. That's of value in my opinion.

Buyer’s remorse, or maybe he didn’t even see them until he got home and his wife pointed them out. He should have shrugged and moved on.
You were the bigger man. Sleep well in that knowledge.

The time to re-negotiate, based on a difference of opinion, is before the money is exchanged, not after.

He saw before he left. I’m okay with it, just wondering what others would do.

I everyone is doing 90mph, some people are going to swerve multiple lanes to do 95mph.
It's just human nature to want something more. Petty flaws of personality. You could have taken a hard line, but he did drive a long way and felt there was something undisclosed. (I agree it should have been negotiated before) A bill is probably insignificant to the total. You made the sale and everyone walks away happy. That's a good sale.

I'm a nice guy. I probably wouldn't have given the $100. He missed the opportunity to negotiate.
You were more than reasonable. Sleep well. |

Very reasonable. You discussed it at the time of sale and he made no mention of the price being a problem.
People who start negotiating after they get home with the item really piss me off. |

You went out of your way to make the guy happy after the negotiations were over.
That qualifies as more than fair. He has eyes. |

What?!?!

Overall, you did the fair thing. That's the most important part.
However, it's extremely easy to take very good and clear photos of items for sale. If those are the pics from your ad, they aren't very good. Out of focus, hard to perceive depth and size. And I know you said it was in storage, but it's on you to fairly represent the item. Else, price it with a fair discount from market value. Btw, did Byron take those for you? ![]() *ducking*

I would have held my ground on the price. It's only fair. I just sent some seats out to the west coast, got an email from UPS and they charged more shipping. I will not ask the buyer to come up with more money. I gave him a price, and I will stick with it. It's only fair.

It's not the $100. It's the little winky syndrome. Got to re-negotiate to "win" the last round after the deal is closed. My standard response is NO.
