Bullet trap
 

Hi all, some time ago Tim Hancock posted about a bullet trap that he made. I have some plans and drawings for large bullet traps, but am looking for a smaller, 9mm, design, close to the pictures Tim had posted. Am not looking for ballistic rubber, or mulch type plans. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Stacked rail road ties to make a back wall and side arms that are angled.

then line with 2 layers of sand bags. Put a cover over it. Plan on replacing the facing layer of sand bags every so often. Will stand up to everything but 50bmg

Was this some kind of joke? I have had folks I had never heard of over the years inquire via pm wanting plans or info on my DIY bullet trap I built.... kind of weird.

I use a thing called distance. It's 'new' but its an option when you have 300 acres and your closest neighbor is 3/4 of a mile away...

To heck with the bullet trap--we are waiting on the next installment of the RV rebuild!

Remind me to not move down range of wherever your house is located.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that... If any more of the land around us goes up for sale, we will buy it too.

have been following the rv re build, we had one a few years ago, that was a rear end repair, a bit easier. We have always wanted to build a trap with a deceleration chamber, old school technology. Searching the net, brought up one spec of an angle of 24 degrees prior to the deceleration chamber.But want to get the angle correct, and not experiment. Since we live in the country we have our own shooting range. Thanks.

24 degrees would be fine IMO. Pretty sure mine is closer to 30 degrees with a 1/2" opening leading into the approximate 4" dia heavy wall tube. Care must be taken to make sure the tangent wall is slightly proud of the tube wall to avoid a protruding edge where bullet skips onto tube wall. I still use mine on occasion for primarily .22 pistol. Structurally it shows no signs of deterioration. I have also fired a few hundred .40 and 9mm into it with no issue. I NEVER shoot centerfire rifle at ANY steel targets. I always wear safety glasses and never shoot closer than about 20'-25'.

There is very dangerous risk of richochet if one hits a leading edge of this style of target.... This bullet trap has served me well over the years with tens of thousands of rounds shot into it, but I cannot be held responsible for anyone who chooses to replicate it.
