Microsoft deactivated my Word program

Need it to create and modify documents...duh.

Anyone have a work around or a product key?

legion 01-29-2020 07:24 AM

You can download Libre Office for free. Microsoft wants to push you to Office 365.

stomachmonkey 01-29-2020 07:25 AM

google docs

As in , use googles docs, not google (search) docs

Cajundaddy 01-29-2020 07:46 AM

Open Office is free and supports most Microsoft formats including Word.

Great search engine and gmail works well, but I’m concerned about privacy with that company. I don’t want them to get their hooks into me any more deeply than they already are.

That's exactly what Google Docs and Office 365 are designed to do: make all of your documents part of the information Google or Microsoft collect about you.

flipper35 01-29-2020 08:21 AM

Your office suite didn't come with a key?

Joe Bob 01-29-2020 08:54 AM

Lost the documentation....

Thanks, looks like it will work.

I'm guessing you moved computers? If this is correct, there are programs which will go through your old PC (registry) and find all of the keys for all of your programs.

Joe Bob 01-29-2020 09:12 AM

No same computer. It was delivered with MS suite. Got a notice of deactivation and they wanted $150.

If you have a link to those programs that would be helpful.

Bought new?

How long have you had it?

Joe Bob 01-29-2020 09:24 AM

Yupperz, Lenovo Think Pad.

So bought new?

And how long ago?

Sounds to me like you've been using the time limited trial version which has expired.

Retrieving the key from registry won't help.

Joe Bob 01-29-2020 09:31 AM

When windoze 10 came out. Or was it 8....prolly 6+ years. I had to order it with 7 as I heard all the reviews.

Well, did you pay the bill ?

id10t 01-29-2020 01:44 PM

Ah, the joys of proprietary non-Free software.

Glad to see several recommendations for Free and Open Source software already posted.

Open Office is awesome... I use it as well. They've got their own versions of excel, powerpoint, etc., and you can save files as .docx, .ppt, ect too.

That was my first thought.

Or maybe a conflict between a licensed version and a pre-installed (or added w/ OS upgrade) trial version?

Might check installed programs to make sure there are not multiple copies installed.

Word can't duplicate this so it's useless anyway.

Used it for 19 years as the only Linux user on campus interoperating with 3000 other users all on whatever version of Windows and Office. Always great when the domain died and I was the only one to keep working, or when the migration to Office 365 screwed everyone up except me. Also lots of fun when I was the only person on campus that could open a file some student submitted as homework, or part of a disciplinary appeal, etc.

I use Word 97, and Excel 97. It's great. All I do is type up the occasional letter and print it. I've enjoyed it since, well, since 97 I suppose.

sugarwood 01-29-2020 06:37 PM

How exactly did Microsoft deactivate your Word program?

sc_rufctr 01-29-2020 06:43 PM

^^^ If your PC or LT is connected to the internet they can do that remotely now. (Introduce with Windows 10)

I've had a gut full of Microsoft... I refuse to give them any money.

Sounds like ransomware. (or phishing)

Are you sure that came from MSFT?

And not just a case of your computer having caught the coronavirus!

This makes a lot of sense.

zakthor 01-30-2020 06:11 AM

Ive had key problems before, always quickly resolved on the phone. Did you try calling them?

Ps: Open office suxxxx.

Rtrorkt 01-30-2020 06:26 AM

same thing happened to my Mac. Had office loaded. MS upgraded something making opening word, excel, powerpoint impossible without going to 365. I am getting by using Apple native software, through keynote is not as user friendly as powerpoint
