165 Mph 73 2.4s ???

165 MPH from a 73 2.4S? I may just be ignorant of the capabilities of these early cars.

Item # 140038266026

Is this possible?

With the correct gearing, maybe. I'm not sure. You should've posted this in Tech, btw.

Nice car, interesting write up, it has hillclimb gearing so I don't think it will run 165 mph w/ grunt gearing. It's at $37,100 and reserve not met. I think I'll take a pass.

I think the new owner may be a little disappointed unless the previous owner has installed NO system.

I'm thinking that 165 would require about 275-300hp and the right gearing.

THE SHORT GEARED (HILL CLIMB RATIOS)
that's the wrong gearing for 165.

THE ENGINE PULLS VERY HARD PAST 8,500+ RPM WITH NO PROBLEM! (YES PAST THE HIGHEST 8,000 RPM MARK ON THE TACH!)

uh huh.

My guess is idiot, liar, or both, but I could be wrong.

All caps usually indicates a dork of some kind:

"ENGINE IS A CORRECT 1973 911S ENGINE #6330055... IS IT THE ORIGINAL ENGINE? (I DONT KNOW AND I DONT CARE!) "

" AND HAVE SEEN THIS CAR OUT RUN 930 TURBOS AND OTHER RS TYPE CARS 0-100+ MPH.. PLUS REMEMBER IT IS A TARGA!... "

2.4 outrun a 930? Sounds a little optimistic to me.

Optimistic? That's a nice way to put it.

+1. Trying to sell it as everything perfect and throws in the first statement?

Second statenment you quote is pure gold. I'd be happy to see him at the stoplight (or track if you prefer).

FWIW, this seller is well-known in early car circles and is not an 'idiot'. Don't know about the performance claims, but it's a great looking car!

I was wondering-

Would different gear ratios in the 915 change the way the speedo sender works? Maybe the cause for the 165 mph claim?

It certainly looks like a very nice car.

Besides the fact this ad is full of exaggerations this car is really a cool car. The best color for a early 911 easily and most targas of this vintage have rotted away.

Is he a dealer or is he a "dealer"? He may be well known by Tom Cruise or someone else w/ money to burn but I still think the car is overpriced already and the reserve has not been met.

I did not want to cast dispersions about the seller - but I just didn't think that a stock 911 from the 70's could make such engine or ground speeds without major mods both to the engine and the aerodynamics of the exterior.

I agree, however, that it looks like a *****en car!

You are all forgetting something - it is metallic blue -- that easily adds 15 mph to the top end. Too bad it's not Gemini -- then it would easily go 187 mph.

What are those hideous appendages out front on the bumper? WOW.

It goes so well, but still has the boat anchor AC attached (w/o the belt).

This is another good example as to the use of paragraphs, and not all caps would be very nice.

Looks like a nice car, but the fantasy description makes him look like a liar. I bet he'd add $5k if he would have just paid someone to write and edit his introduction. Boys & Girls, it pays to learn to read, write, puntuate and spell.
