My neighbor (picture above) paid just under $4k for his 240Z brand new and it also has dealer installed R12 AC which still works great in the middle of summer here in Houston. Throw on a set of triple sidedraughts and a really good exhaust system and you'll be able to keep up with a Dino.

I don't doubt any of that, but my "slow" comment was a personal observation of how the car's power and acceleration seemed to my then 19 year old self (it felt no faster or more powerful than my Opel GT, which was very slow). I'm sure that I would consider the Dino to be very lackluster in scoot, as well.

For $300+K I would need a car to have a minimum of 500 hp to even look at it twice (not that I have that kind of money by a long shot), as I do not care about such things as low miles/all original vintage, momentum street car, etc.

Captain obvious but...

Back in the day these cars were nowhere near as desirable as the cars from Europe.
I'm sure they were capable but that desirability thing is a big deal.

Did you ever see the movie Corvette Summer? :(

Bingo!

Several good, descriptive videos on a fantastic car. The attention to explaining every detail by the seller (video narrarator) is what got the fever pitch excitement, and thus, the bidding war that ended with a big payday.

The 240Z collector world is crazy but still, this was a one-off. It was a series 1 car that has sat on a showroom floor for most of the last 50 years. If people w modified later 240Z cars think this has any bearing on their car, they are crazy. They sold a LOT of Datsun Z-cars and only the first ones were real sports cars.

I remember wandering through the local pick-ur-part junk yards back in the 90s, when I had my own 240Z, and marveling at the number of rust-free Zs were being junked. I was also surprised at the number of 928s but this is LA.

One-off car and one-off buyer.

The guy bought it as a gift/tribute for his deceased son, if I read the link correctly that I posted.

It was not really an arms-length transaction. It was probably emotion and this was the perfect car to perhaps fill the void created by his son's passing.

No and no. It was not a one-off buyer because more than one person was bidding @ $300k. And we do not know who bought it this time. The article describes how the original dealer gifted it to his son, who lived another 48 years until 2019. It was being sold from his estate, I'm assuming.

And in other news, 1971 240Z in great shape for sale on BaT right now, ending soon:

Maybe I should start looking for pre-77 Celicas, but I'd like one already swapped to a more modern engine from Lexus or even a newer Toyota maybe. :)

Hagerty: 1971 Datsun 240Z sells for a jaw-dropping, record-setting $310,000 on Bring a Trailer

Yep. Sorry.

It’s an extremely original car with high desirability and sporting pretensions (rear drums and non cross flow head aside - like it’s ever getting driven so doesn’t really matter) that two guys wanted bad enough to crank the bids to eleven squared....

The first part of this sentence is correct, the second part isn't

I should have said, "IMO," which covers pretty much everything typed here. :)

I had a '78 280Z and while it was an ok car, it wasn't my definition of a sports car. Well made, without a doubt and decent looking, for sure. My dad had a new '72 240Z for a couple years w Pete Brock headers and full exhaust plus one inch wider American Racing slotted rims. That thing was a sports car and it ripped...no one would call it slow at the time and the fastest muscle cars had very recently been sold in the U.S.

As for the Z-cars built after my '78, they were an embarrassment. One friend had a new 280-ZX turbo in the '80s that was flat-out pathetic. Those were dark times for most cars.

One of my friends bought a brand new 280 ZX in the 1980s.
At the time one of the amazing features is the car had a talking computer to tell you the door was ajar and other things. It was a pleasant female voice. His wife was so jealous of that voice, he had to go to the dealer and get it re-programmed into the male version.

They divorced a few years later. He still has the car, and it is all original and in great shape. I have often wondered if he ever reprogrammed the voice to female.
