I have a 71 Marantz turntable going through an late 60's all-tube Marantz 100watt reciever/tuner (worth some money from what i understand) then out to 12 inch RSL's. It was my dad's old setup. I only use this combo for the records. When i play records through anything else, they sound horrible

About the only valuable records I have are an original Beatles butcher-block cover in poor shape and an un-opened first pressing of Pet Sounds.

If you're leaning to the pop side how about The Stranglers, or a great US pop band was the Plimsouls. On the punkish/new wave side I liked The Lords of the New Church also.

Ja, "Kein Mitgefühl für die Mehrheit" is German for "No sympathy for the majority". I think....though my Deutsche is rustig. :D

King Crimson has a kick-ass DVD out there (Deja Vroom). Different Dolby mixes to highlight the various instruments, camera angles to switch to different band members....good stuff, and a chance to use all the nifty features on your DVD player.

I like everything

industrial, hardcore, gothic, new wave, you name it.

Growing up, i didnt have nursery ryhmes or Sesame Street. My parents played Zeppelin and Sabbath. Those were my nursery rhymes.

music is a drug to me. I couldnt live without it.

Sounds like good music at your place. A day here could include everything from John Lee Hooker to Freddie King to The Ventures, to The Screaming Trees, to Buffalo Tom, to The Lime Spiders to Professor Longhair to The Sonics to Girl Trouble.....

About the only thing not hitting the airwaves is Country or new Pop stuff.

I have been really happy about the state of music nowadays. There is so much good new stuff coming out these days. For a long time, new stuff was horrible.

Thanks Jared - I know who "Johnny Rotten" is, but I never did hear of that other band. See...I continue to learn new things everyday!! :)

I suppose i should also give Gary Numan/Tubeway Army a mention here as well. Not as well known, but TONS of great songs. Down in The Park, Are Friends Electric?, and Every Day I Die are some of the most atmospheric songs I have ever heard.

"the good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain."

Wire - now that was a good 'um. "A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck," was a great album.

A friend lent me the new Sonic Youth, but I haven't listened to it. Man, has Thurston Moore gotten old.

Anyone into Sonic Youth?

Kim Gordon looks even worse. I dig some Sonic Youth stuff, but they were always a little too experimental for my tastes

Okay Rock n' Roll Jeopardy guys - lyrics from a late eighties college band that were this: "This monkey's gone to heaven. This monkey's gone to heaven..."

Name the band...

Pixies

Worst concert of the 80s:

"Flock of Seagulls," it was like watching sweaty doughy English dudes with bad hair try to electrocute themselves with their own perspiration and instruments.

Billy Idol - he was so stoned, he spent the entire concert leaning on his guitar.

Simple Minds - not into it, and it showed. Post Chrissy Hynde *****-slap for Jim Kerr, I think, and the Simple Mind's bassist had a broken leg to boot. Boring...

Jared, You have an unopened first pressing of Pet Sounds in mono????? Holy Christ, that's the record equivalent of having a brand new, shrink-wrapped '73 Carrera RS. I do have it in mono, but not that old. I love vinyl as well, do you shop at Amoeba records in Hollywood? Great place to spend all of your $$. Here is a purchase from there, (on my Beogram):

Okay, I'll toss in two cents...trivia time: WHY were so many of the Beach Boys hits done in mono????

Adam 04-04-2003 09:11 PM

I just read in today's paper that Eddie Vedder was booed off stage at a (very) recent concert for stomping a George 'Dubya' Bush mask into paste between songs, during a tirade.

Half the crowd left on the spot.

Yep, it happened...not going to burn any of my early Pearl Jam stuff, but don't think I'll be buying any more. I've had it with celebrities shoving their views down my throat. Especially when I know they are less educated and less in touch with the real world than many of us.

Shop at Ameoba all the time. Nice Beogram! I have been trying to find a cheap cartridge for mine. My copy of Pet Sounds isnt that nice, it has water damage/mold. My dad somehow had the forethoguht to buy a copy of it to save. I think maybe because he liked it so much, he had a spare for when he wore out the first copy. I got all his old records a few years ago.

dd74 04-08-2003 09:38 AM

Well, all my Smiths albums are on vinyl - except "Strangeways Here We Come."

Does that count for anything?
