Xcaret Mexico resort?
Thinking about trying an all inclusive resort in a nice warm place. The Xcaret resort in Cancun looks pretty amazing. I am looking for a nice fun place for my wife and I and our three kids, (25, 15, 11). We enjoyed the keys a couple years ago for the relaxed natural fun, beaches, scuba, snorkeling, and food.
![]() Anyone been to Xcaret or that general area would love opinions. |

I sincerely can't remember the hotel name but those mega-hotels with all services are all prime locations (In my opinion). You don't need to be close to Xcaret, they all have shuttle services.
So you can shop around and look for hotels with good reviews. Consider that you're 1-1.5hrs from Cancun if you're planning to go to town for shopping, restaurants, etc, Good luck, post some pics to get us all wondering we are we live so close to the northpole.

I stayed at either the Now Sapphire or Jade Riviera Cancun - great spot.

We went to Xcaret for a day trip out of cancun.
It was a great resort: snorkeling, beach, and underground tunnels. The evening entertainment was very good as well. Sat night?

It's almost 50 miles from Cancun..if that matters.
I've been to Cancun three times in the last 10 years...each time in late Jan or Feb Each visit was windy, cloudy, and cool. I'd recommend the southern gulf coast of FL instead. (esp for the kids)

Been a few times as well. Always stayed in Cancun and just took shuttles to Xcaret/PDC/Talum/etc. Fun, but can get a bit crowded during the high-season. Personally, I probably wouldn't go back due to the BTDT factor and the spike in cartel activity in Cancun. It's gotten a bit out of control, even in the touristy spots, despite LE efforts to "shield" them from such. I've driven to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) from PHX a few times back in the day without any concern. I wouldn't even dream of doing that these days. YMMV...

if you must. I hate cancun.....would be great if I was 21-28 old partiers. Get out of there, rent a car, and head down to Akumal for a chill vibe. https://oasishoteles.com/en/hotels/grand-oasis-tulum

Look at travel warnings from your government sites. It may change your mind about Mexico.

Player Del Carman is where we go and stay but have not been for more then 5 years. Xcaret is great, basically a water amusement park. Safe for kids and everyone else. Look for all inclusive hotels and such but we dislike that and want to go out and get mixed in with the locals. No Cancun. Too many drunk American youth, party crowd.

We stay at Vidanta in Riviera Maya. Was there in December. Vidanta resorts are VERY nice. They have them throughout Mexico. They have the only Cirque de Solei dinner theater in the world on their property. Super fun. If you go and choose to do Tuluum or Chichen Itza(sp?) pm me for a private guide contact that will literally amaze you and be worth EVERY penny you pay him.

Looking at the government travel advisory site, you would not travel to most major American cities. Need to use that site with a bit of intelligence and not just assume what you are reading applies specifically to the area you are intending to visit.

We've been to the Finest Playa Mujeres for the last three summer breaks. Amazing resort with a wide variety of things to do and extremely good food. Something like 16 restaurants covering food of every type. Isla Mujeres is an easy and fun day trip, it's about 20 minutes north of Cancun which we never felt the need to visit. Highly recommend.

I've been to Cancun (hotel zone) twice. It was a great experience, and I think you, your wife, 25, and 15yr old would have a great time. the 11yo, not so much.
Xcaret is a completely different place and would be much better suited for the whole family.

Wife and I stayed at Occidental in Xcaret for a week many years ago. We're not "all inclusive" types, but we were in the area for a destination wedding and understood that the rest of the wedding party would be staying at the resort as well. I found the place to be good (but not excellent). Pretty far from Cancun, and if we went to "town" it was Playa Del Carmen.
My favorite memory from that vacation was snorkeling in Akumal (which was mentioned by a previous poster). If we were going to visit that area again, I'd want to stay in Akumal.

I was present and thought I was in a very safe place when I witnessed 7 killed at the Grand Riveria Princess in 2010. I could spend an hour telling you the horror of this, none of which made the press:

Lots of nice all inclusives south of Cancun towards Playa. I would stay away from Cancun downtown.

DW, and I stayed in Cancun at one of the big all inclusive resorts. The bus trip to any off site excursion is truly an eye opener into a third world type setting, where subsistance living is norm, and the crowds are rough.
