Porschephiles
Years ago, back in the early 90's I belonged to a BBS that went by the name Porschephiles.
Does anyone remember who ran the Board? What ever became of it, was it taken over be Pelican?

The guy who ran it was Stan Hanks.
I joined porschephiles sometime in 1994. IIRC, it morphed into "porschefans" and then ultimately became rennlist. I may be wrong, though. The guy who took over in the porschefans days (John something-or-other) wanted to start charging money to be a member and also had some plans for using the money, etc., that I didn't agree with so I bailed. I was a man without a country until I joined Pelican in 2003. I had lurked for a long time, but joined when I installed my 3.2 and needed to ask some questions.

Thanks, Bob. That was a good link to read some of the history. John Dunkle was the guy...
Porschephiles was my first foray into this online world. Lots of good stories from those days. Back then it was so small that all Porsche owners were on one mailing list, so you had discussions on everything from 356s to 964s! 911s, 944s, 928s, 914s, everything on one list. Stan Hanks was a 914 guy, IIRC. Stan would send out a "who's who" list every once in awhile and by my memory there were only about 250 people on the list when I joined - for the whole world. And, the list included some interesting folks. Bruce Anderson, Harry Pellow and Pete Albrecht come to mind. Pete and Harry didn't see eye to eye and their flame war (before that was a thing?) was epic. I ended up meeting and having dinner with Pete once in SoCal. Great guy.

Thanks so much for the information. After I read the stuff I remembered Stan as the guy that was running the BBS.
Thanks Again

I was part of that list.... what was the guys name that insisted it was better to run wider tires up front than the rear on a 911

I got my start on the Rennlist email list with John Dunkle at the helm. I think I was on for 1.5-2 years before I switched over, mostly because I stopped being able to check email from work.
It was a great community. Lots of the folks from Rennlist ended up here at Pelican.

I was on Rennlist before Pelican, but the 911 Turbo forum there died and Pelican became more active. Left Rennlist when they wanted to charge for the Off Topic forum. John sold it to Internet Brands or something. Same owner as Pelican now?

Pelican is owned by ECS Tuning in Ohio.
Not sure if that's Internet Brands.

I joined 914 World because I was daily driving my 914-6 around 1997 or so. I bought some original RSR struts from a guy who ran a rapid prototyping forge somewhere near LA. I tried to join Pelican probably around 1995, but my application was not approved, Haha !! By the time I was admitted into Pelican, I had started buying parts from Strasse. I was literally one of Gabe's first customers. Met him at the Parts Haven swap meet. Damn, a lot of good old school guys in the Porsche community.

Thanks, recalling good memories / stories.
Like a guy named Farzan Kassam (sp?) describing his modified turbo 944 (951) at the drag strip. Or maybe that was another list? |

I tell this story a lot, but I remember one time reading porschephiles and Stan Hanks had just gotten back from some IT industry trade show or something and told us about this new technology called a "web browser"!!!! I think it was NCSA Mosaic or one of those early ones. Crazy stuff.
At the time all we had was email and turbogopher.

Started with 914 World around 1996, that was a great forum.
Then Pelican in 1998. A few months after it started. A lot of the 914 guys posted here in the beginning. In fact, as I recall, when Pelican started the 914 tech board had the highest post volume. It took a while for the 911 board to pass it. |
