Independent Porsche Repair Hourly Rate
Was at one of my customers, a shop, the other day and we were talking about finding help/assistants and stuff like that. He mentioned that he's going up to $175 an hour. Does fantastic work, super clean, drop a chili dog and scoop it up and eat it floor, and cares more than most about the work he does. Not many standard repair shops send hardware out to be replated.
Curious, what are you paying? And if you don't mind posting, what are you charging?

My main guy is now at $150 an hour but if you dropped your wallet on the floor, you wouldn't even think of picking it up, it's the opposite of immaculate ;-) Between that and the 175 you mention, things are barely better than a dealer rate at this point. I guess it might just be worth it based on them not using book rate like a dealer (but is that even the case everywhere?) but otherwise at $175 an hour for an indy, I'm going to a Porsche dealer and getting the stamp in the booklet... figuratively speaking. (but...my local dealer's service dept is terrible so I'm sticking with my guys)

I think the last few places that I've gone have been around 140-175

Based on the figures above - would love to know what the tech's hourly pay is - flat rate or otherwise.

At a $150-$175 for an hour, I can screw it up three (3) times at home and still come out ahead...plus I do enjoy the technical stimulation of the hobby.
I love old cars and never had the $$$ to buy the best out there, so had to end up buying people's old hand me downs and make them right over the course of several years. I think about the cost an Indy would charge on my 928 for a timing belt, water pump and the motor mounts and it would easily exceed my purchase price.

Indie was $110 when I went during the summer. My other mechanic who is better in my opinion but not a Porsche shop, $90.

I was quoted $7k for 915 rebuild. Their labor rate last time I was in was $125, I am sure their price went up in their rough quote.

~$100/hour as the hook up. Usually $130-140/hr

My friend Tony is a factory trained wrench. He is retired now, but will still do engine rebuilds, valve seat machining, transmission rebuilds, etc. He charges $40 per hr. in his home garage.
I think Melissa paid something close to $1K for an oil change and 20k mile service on the Macan at the dealer. I didn't ReALly want to know how much the bill was. I just changed the shift cables and installed the upgraded 987.2 shifter parts, GT3 shifter, and adjusted my own shift cables at home. Hourly cost? $0.00 And it shifts like a rally car now. |

I sort of enjoy working on cars, wish I had more time to do it, I really need to get a setup to do my own alignments.
Last time I was in an indy shop was when I was picking up some 914 wheels and lug bolts. $115 in 2005 dollars.

That seems expensive for an independent. Porsche charges that much here.
I sometime use the Lambo dealer here as they have a great, trained Porsche tech. They charge $165 CDN ($185 for Lambos)

OTOH, I do my own tuneups, oil change, did the shifter cable and shifter modification, sport exhaust, added a GT-3 intake and IPD plenum, center radiator and front valance modification, GT3 suspension and brakes, and on and on. 914s are super easy and light, making the work far more straightforward and gratifying than later models. |
