Infuriating Irony

Its a long article, but this bit stuck out to me as cruelly (to us) ironic:

https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-lost-notebook/

Quote:
The notebooks have now mostly disappeared, destroyed by Zuckerberg himself. He says he did it for privacy reasons. This is in keeping with sentiments he expressed to me about the pain of having many of his early IMs and emails exposed in the aftermath of legal proceedings. “Would you want every joke that you made to someone being printed and taken out of context later?” he asks, adding that the exposure of his juvenile jottings is a factor in his current push to build encryption and ephemerality into Facebook's products.
How many people have been fired, how many lives ruined because someone dug up something from years ago on Facebook? It seems that Zuckerberg is keenly aware of this, and works hard....to protect himself from the destruction that his platform enables.

Hmmm, I take it as he is acknowledging how social platforms, not just his own, can lead to unintended consequences.

The take away, we need to take some responsibility for protecting ourselves.

Short form, don't be stupid.

He essentially entices teenagers onto the platform with the digital equivalent of a "free candy" sign. Only years later do they discover that Facebook (or its subsidiaries WhatsApp or Instagram) is preserving their boorish behavior forever.

The thing is, his platforms aren't the only ones. Hell, kids don't even like facebook that much any more because their parents and grand parents are on it, so how cool could it possibly be.

He may be one of the more successful devils, but he's not the only one. If you prosecuted him and shutdown all of his crap, there would be others to take over. So, you have to take your own personal responsibility.

Yeah Facebook is not as big a thing with todays youth.

Neither of my kids or their friends are on it.

They think it's for wine drinking moms.

The only difference between it and Pelican is the reach.

We've all been guilty of posting stuff here we may find some point down the road that we probably should not have.

Just because someone gives us a platform to show our stupidity does not mean we have to.

I'm in the this is a personal responsibility issue camp.

Emails, and now social posts, live forever. Be careful on what you post. Most/All employers scan for this stuff as part of your background check. What was acceptable once, perhaps will not be in the future. This includes jokes.

FWIW

Monetizing would be more apt I think.

Maybe employers should be less interested in other people's business.

Context is everything. Something said at Walmarts would maybe not go over so well if said in church.

I don’t know how many, but I do know that they are all dumb/naive/extremely un-savvy to have done that to themselves.
