Would you get your fingerprint printed on your 911?

Serious question, would you? Porsche has developed a direct printing method that allows you to add it to your 992-generation 911. Their reasoning behind a fingerprint is the showcase the technology that is capable in creating more detailed designs that aren't possible with conventional painting. Porsche says in the future, there will be other customer-specific designs available.

Quote:

Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur will print the design on the hood after the 911's production is completed. The hood is removed, the biometric data is processed so that it can't be used illegally, and then a robot paints on the design. Finally, a clear coat is applied, and the hood is polished with a high-gloss finish.

Future pricing for U.S. buyers will be "determined on a case-by-case basis of individual personalization," Porsche told C/D.
This option will be available in March for European customers and cost $8100 additional on top of the sticker price.

How much extra to print your SSN on the doors? :D

Jim Richards 02-24-2020 03:42 PM

No. This is some dumb scheiße.

There may be some interesting applications of this technology. Fingerprints are just a showcase as stated.

But I still get groceries at Aldi.

wdfifteen 02-24-2020 04:07 PM

No to fingerprints. Holy cow who would do that?
If I sit on the copier and make a xerox of my bare ass could they put that on the hood? ‘Cause that would be awesome.

Jim Richards 02-24-2020 04:10 PM

Yeah, I’m impressed by the technology, but to use it to display one’s fingerprint on their car is mighty dumb. Is this next?

Typed this while you were posting, wdi. Great minds...

wdfifteen 02-24-2020 04:14 PM

Great asses! :D

Por_sha911 02-24-2020 04:19 PM

"Good fingerprints but certainly not great fingerprints"

Jim Richards 02-24-2020 04:20 PM

It appears I was bad. Mea culpa.

Porsche-O-Phile 02-25-2020 04:18 AM

Can they put my entire gene sequence on there?

svandamme 02-25-2020 04:22 AM

pay 7500 to have something that

- at a distance, looks like a strip of 80ies trimmed pubic hair on yer bonnet (with the crest/badge in there like some piece of bejazzle)
- reduces resale value
- gives your bio-metrics away to anybody who wants to take a picture
- just looks plain ugly

There's a sucker born every day

To quote the post:

Even so, no way I would spend a nickle to put that ugly thing on my car. It it were a sticker that could be removed and only 100 bucks I don't think I personally would want it on my car.

There are people that pay huge money for "art" like the bananas duct taped to a wall.

Imagine paying $120,000 for a banana duct taped to a wall.

My fingerprints are already all over my Targa... and I mean ALL over it!
Plus, they are life size.

svandamme 02-25-2020 07:02 AM

But does the bonnet look like it has a bush?

I will never look at that car the same.

PS: Landing Strip is more appropriate

Jim Richards 02-25-2020 10:07 AM

Maybe Porsche can upsell pre-scratched cars. Include life-like scratches and the correct paint to simulate hitting guard rails at any of the world’s famous racetracks. Customer chooses their favorite track. Great for barstool racers!

I'm no pussy, if it was my car I'd snatch that bonnet off of there in a flat minute.

Shaun @ Tru6 02-25-2020 01:59 PM

The fingerprint winning out in committee, I guess the scratch and sniff hood option will have to wait until next year.

RKDinOKC 02-25-2020 02:13 PM

Prints of various animals splattered on the hood?

john70t 02-25-2020 05:48 PM

It's a different idea of customization. More for the cup holder crowd.
Yer talking to a rouge bunch of hardy scoundrels. $8k is a new car to myself.

I do like the idea of making a product 'your own' though.
Something like that might catch on eventually. Who knows.
I personally dallied with the idea of an Urushi (japanese black lacquer) wood dash cover with interior trim at some point. Very unique and would be very expensive.

My fingerprints are already all over my car...

Whoever pays for this option deserves to be laughed and pointed at, loudly and in public.

T77911S 02-26-2020 03:04 AM

why not paint your name on your car. then you can only sell it to people named after you. that might make the value go up

yeah, a finger print is a "good" idea

Porsche-O-Phile 02-26-2020 03:43 AM

I think they’re intending this for people that actually intend to keep their cars - not worry about resale value. That said I don’t really get it either...

Geronimo '74 02-26-2020 03:56 AM

I guess that every nerd with a decent scanner and a vinyl cutter can make these, no?
(ok, it's not painted and clearcoated then, but OTOH, it is removable)

Must be nice having to show your finger to everybody to prove it really is based on your actual fingerprint....
I reckon that would annoy me really quick, especially if then you also have to defend your decision to pay for such BS...

So it is not even a correct image of the actual fingerprint?

I'm guessing "processing" means modifying so it is not a perfect match anymore (so it can not be mis-used in any way)

cgarr 02-26-2020 04:07 AM

dude must have huge hands?

fastfredracing 02-26-2020 05:46 AM

Coming soon, to isle #4 at Pep Boys . I don't get it either ?
