Even then, while I have ridden both my entire riding career - since the mid 1970's - I will sometimes still screw up when I'm required to react quickly. It's funny, too, it's not always when I'm on my right side shift bike, either.

First bike I rode with right shift was a Harley Sprint in the dirt.....Was showing off, came to a a turn and was gonna hit the brake and slide thru it.....I upshifted and center-punched a tree...........

My question was a serious one , I am 62 and have ridden off and on since I was about 14 . To me the left foot shift right foot brake is automatic and don't have to think about it . I know I could never shift/brake properly with it being opposite . Especially in a panic situation , I am impressed with anyone that can .

Very SWEET!

I can't imaging a right shift. I had a hard enough time with a left kick-start on my old KTM. :D

All I can say is when I am on the Norton (and a previous AJS) my brain justs "shifts" gears to the other side....and 'up too" I don't know how to explain it, maybe becuase I drop the braking leg to the ground when stopped ,then right one becomes the natural one to start shifting. Now the left hand kick start is another issue in it's self, the Husky is a beeeotch to start like that!!

I have found one of the keys for me in an emergency or panic situation is to grab a handful of front brake first, without even thinking about the rear brake. I then move to the rear brake as quickly as possible, but I find this very slight delay in doing so keeps me from stomping on the shifter. And, like Steve says, my mind simply "shifts gears" to the other side. For normal riding, I don't even have to think about it. It's just those emergency situations that will sometimes catch me out.
