As safety masks and protective gear fly off the shelves amid fears of a potential coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., a 2017 advisory put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for men with facial hair who wear tight-fitting respirators is making the rounds again.

The graphic, which demonstrates 36 different ways men may style their facial hair, including the “French fork,” “horseshoe,” and “mutton chops,” says that while the “soul patch,” “side whiskers” and “pencil” style are a go, dozens of others may leave you at risk of contamination.

Several other styles may also be OK, but only if the chin hair doesn’t cross the mask seal...................

“Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases,” Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventative medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, previously told Fox News.
All my gray hair in my beard, I'm going to look years younger if I shave it off.

Hmmm toothbrush even a style anymore

pmax 02-27-2020 02:18 PM

What about the women folks ?

herr_oberst 02-27-2020 02:27 PM

calling the "Hitler" the "Toothbrush" just seems wrong.

Tobra 02-27-2020 03:18 PM

Calling the "Lemmy" the "Hulihee" is worse somehow though.

Good luck finding the respirators. They are sold out everywhere.

herr_oberst 02-27-2020 03:42 PM

Probably all made in China, too.

Do these respirators actually help prevent you from getting a virus? I'm pretty sure a virus can get through the filter of a facial mask. It seems a mask would be helpful to prevent YOU from spreading it if you have it, but I don't see how it's going to filter an aerosol bound virus and keep you from inhaling it.

mostly yes, but the N95s will reduce your chances of inhaling aerosols (to which viral particles may be bound or incorporated)

surgical masks are for droplets, or if one of the surgeons tells a really bad joke, a spurt

Hmmm. Which style makes me look sexy???

Horseshoe?

Supposedly he wore it as a result of a WW1 British gas attack as a runner. Purpose built. :/

Since N95 masks are sold out I would let the beard grow, slap on some Brylcreem, and use it as a comb over filter.

I shaved mine off at the beginning of February. I didn't want to spend the last month on the ice with a beard.

A doctor on CBS This Morning basically said that wearing a mask to prevent the virus doesn't work that well. What works is if YOU are sick, wearing a mask reduces the spread of the disease.

Hitler had a wide Mustache like the "English" in the pictures. It prevented his mask from sealing properly. He was a courier, carrying messages between the officers. He was caught in a gas attack and suffered from the leak. Upon recovery, he shaved it down to what is his famous/infamous.

This was on the History Channel a while ago.

I have had a full beard since the 1970s. It is not longer the brown it was. Now it has many streaks of chrome. Not grey, just chrome.
