Endemic means that a disease is in some sense "permanent"

it circulates permanently in a population, say by emerging every fall or winter

for covid-19 we are of course interested in the human popn.

Endemic is a worst case scenario but appears increasingly likely

So like:

Measles, Rubella, Mumps, Chicken Pox, the Flu, Aids, Polio, and a near endless list of things as well as the "common colds". Small Pox was on the list but vaccinations eliminated it. We almost kill off some of the others until the anti-vaxers decided celebrities and hucksters knew more than real medical doctors and scientists.

the real issue here is the rapid spread of the virus; mortality is low - 2% maybe but if I had to bet I'd bet lower not higher

but endemic means that once you think it is all cleared out in a few months... it comes back

Probably a good chance we see a second wave in the fall. Hopefully, by then we will have a vaccine.

I doubt if we could manufacturer enough for the entire population so it should be only given to those 66 years old and over,

If endemic is/becomes the case with COVID 19, that means those with heart disease, lung ailments or compromised immune systems, as well as elderly with marginal health will have much shorter lives. Take care of your health now or get an early check out time.

To your point - there were 2 waves:
late in 1917 virologists recognized the new (at the time) disease as the flu;
then from January 1918 to late 1920, it became the influenza (Spanish) pandemic.

Maybe you should discover what a word means prior to starting a thread about it and telling folks it means something else.

So in a broad sense; other defined zone or habitat type could be taken to mean the planet as a whole. Therefore
(even if it is only RNA) the coronavirus, once it spreads everywhere, could be considered endemic by definition.

I suppose it may all come down to the "connotative - denotative" thing.
