Endemic - a new word to know

not to be confused with epidemic or pandemic...

Endemic means that a disease is in some sense "permanent"

it circulates permanently in a population, say by emerging every fall or winter

for covid-19 we are of course interested in the human popn.

Endemic is a worst case scenario but appears increasingly likely

GH85Carrera 03-02-2020 01:02 PM

So like:

Measles, Rubella, Mumps, Chicken Pox, the Flu, Aids, Polio, and a near endless list of things as well as the "common colds". Small Pox was on the list but vaccinations eliminated it. We almost kill off some of the others until the anti-vaxers decided celebrities and hucksters knew more than real medical doctors and scientists.

RWebb 03-02-2020 02:22 PM

the real issue here is the rapid spread of the virus; mortality is low - 2% maybe but if I had to bet I'd bet lower not higher

but endemic means that once you think it is all cleared out in a few months... it comes back

Sooner or later 03-02-2020 02:24 PM

Probably a good chance we see a second wave in the fall. Hopefully, by then we will have a vaccine.

human testing of one co.'s vaccine begins in April...

I know. There is also the Israeli vaccine.

I doubt if we could manufacturer enough for the entire population so it should be only given to those 66 years old and over,

(Disclaimer: I am 66 :) )

Ain't that how the Spanish flu was until it mutated!?

RWebb 03-02-2020 03:45 PM

the Spanish Flu did not originate in Spain and spread rapidly due to WWI

not sure what your question is

Arizona_928 03-02-2020 05:46 PM

It was common until it mutated and killed a **** ton of ppl.....

RWebb 03-02-2020 08:40 PM

well I happen to have some bad mutability news for you regarding the spike protein on covid-19 and the ACE2 cell surface receptor...

sc_rufctr 03-02-2020 08:54 PM

As of April 2019 we have reached 7.7 billion people world wide!

I can't see how the population can keep increasing without consequences.

Something has to give.

If endemic is/becomes the case with COVID 19, that means those with heart disease, lung ailments or compromised immune systems, as well as elderly with marginal health will have much shorter lives. Take care of your health now or get an early check out time.

sc_rufctr 03-02-2020 09:41 PM

^^^ If that happens we'll develop resistant to COVID 19. But not all of us... :(

To your point - there were 2 waves:
late in 1917 virologists recognized the new (at the time) disease as the flu;
then from January 1918 to late 1920, it became the influenza (Spanish) pandemic.

Maybe you should discover what a word means prior to starting a thread about it and telling folks it means something else.

Alternatively, carry on as you always have.

RWebb 03-03-2020 11:42 AM

tobra if you could prove what you said you'd be a normal person

now go back to PARF

Deschodt 03-04-2020 01:31 PM

it's not virus related - you can say greed is endemic to the corporate world...
Ignorance is endemic amongts project managers... etc...

Hawkeye's-911T 03-04-2020 04:35 PM

"Endemism is the ecological state of a species being unique to a defined geographic location, such as an island,
nation, country or other defined zone, or habitat type; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic
to it if they are also found elsewhere."

So in a broad sense; other defined zone or habitat type could be taken to mean the planet as a whole. Therefore
(even if it is only RNA) the coronavirus, once it spreads everywhere, could be considered endemic by definition.

I suppose it may all come down to the "connotative - denotative" thing.

Cheers
JB

for a parasite, it means lodged in the host popn. more or less permanently
