Big NASCAR news

Next year, in an effort to remain relevant, NASCAR will move to the 18 inch aluminum wheel with a centerlock.

Moving forward, the rear suspension of the race car will continue to be based on a 1966 Chevy half-ton pickup.

saw that last night.

aluminum wheels, could be interesting.

im thinking about the rear end on my late model and trying to figure out how they would adapt a hub to a solid axle that would have a center lockt.

If GM engineers back then only knew the impact of a 1/2 ton pickup truck rear suspension on circle track racing.

One of the NASCAR head honchos (Probst?) made some comment that while the 18" aluminum wheel makes the racecars more "relavent," he acknowledged that he didn't know of any street cars that use centerlock wheels. Granted this is a Porsche board, but centerlocks have been on 911s long enough that shouldn't the average car guy/gearhead know about that off the top of his head?

These top tier execs aren't necessarily knowledgeable car guys. After all, they're primarily in the entertainment and marketing business. Not surprising that they wouldn't know about centerlocks. I would expect that a good many average car enthusiasts don't know about them either...unless maybe they've owned or worked on a car with wire wheels & knockoffs.

Trigo makes an adapter for you. GM and Ford 5 bolt patterns.

Had a center lock type device on my 1965 MGB. Put wheels on with a hammer.

The talk is that a 6-speed sequential tranny at the rear with IRS is coming.

I ran that past a friend who follows NASCAR. His reply:

Nascar hasn't admitted it but the 2nd and 3rd Gen 7 test cars were both wrecked and wiped out in practice sessions. The second was wrecked by Eric Jones just before Daytona and the newest one with the center lock wheels was wrecked yesterday (Tuesday the 3rd) at Mexifornia speedway by William Byron. The punk kids these days buying rides can't drive. They kinda admitted about the 3rd car being in an accident by Byron. Also pix at the link below of the car.

I didn't know the chassis was updated to a 66 Chevy, thought they were still running a 65 Ford Galaxie platform. For real.

First EFI, then center-lock BBS wheels and independent rear suspension? What's next for NASCAR.....right turns?

that's funny, my wife just asked why don't they use air jacks like F1.

why not just go to F1 style pit stops, 3 guys on each corner

They've been taking the "stock" out of stock car for decades. NASCAR has lost more of my interest with every move away from a car that I can identify on the street. It's all about the soap opera of the drivers now anyway, so why make the cars more expensive?
What they really need is a rule that allows more sheet metal on the cars to get room for more sponsors. How about a big vertical "stabilizer" (for safety doncha know ) with a big digital screen on it like Times Square?

You can't get many ads on a centerlock hub, so it's a bad move.

Except F1 doesn't use air jacks, they have people front and rear with over center jacks. Indy car and sports cars use air jacks and I wish F1 would from a safety point of view as well.

the drive axles are splines on the end inside the live axle unit
remove the 5 bolt hub and press on any hub needed to fit

I would NOT use an adapter at 200mph

btw the ford 9'' rear is the standard nastycar unit not the chevy 12 bolt
and they use mopar brakes even after mopar quit racing

This because the Ford 9" is hard to beat for strength. Very popular among the street rod set, with many aftermarket builds available.

Yeah, I thought he meant for his pickup. My bad.
