Microsoft Edge

So has Microsoft Edge taken replaced Explorer? Can you still use Explorer? I woke up this morning and my Explorer was gone and Edge was there. Why can't they just leave things alone and provide periodic improvements?

I just had to deal with this at work when they changed everyone over to Windows10. I was so frustrated by the end of the day trying to do what was still required, but no idea where anything was.

Edge replaced Explorer years ago. They both suck, I use Chrome.

Microsoft Edge is a POS... It's just bloatware crap.

Download a good browser like Chrome or my favourite Opera. Mozilla is another good option.

Edge now uses the Chromium rending engine, so they are closer than you think.

Oh and consider ditching Microsoft for good.

At home I only use Linux Mint even though I make a living supporting Microsoft products.

Explored was written decades ago. It was very vulnerable to viruses and not able to cope with modern web pages. It was an application for the days of dial up and limited web page functionality. It was full of patches, and like a worn out tire, there was just nothing worth saving.

I personally like Firefox. I am not a big fan of Google products since I suspect their biggest push is to gather data on the user. I so expect all the free web browsers do that to some extent.

So in the end, just like Windows 95 once had people standing in lines to buy a copy at the computer store, its time has passed.

Next to the Microsoft Symbol on the lower left is a search icon. Click there and type explorer.

Once you have it up, look at the system tray and right click on it and pin it. You now have access to Explorer 11.

As ID10T said, Edge is now Chromium based. BUT, every website is different. The Blue-Cross website doesn't fully work on Chrome. It works fine with Edge or IE11. We have a few company specific website (submitting invoices, etc) that only with with IE11.

A couple of weeks back, I was having a lot of trouble with Chrome. Pages would take 15-30 seconds to come up. No issues with the other browsers. It took removing and reloading Chrome to make it work properly again.

That makes sense and I am also not a fan of Google products, Chrome pops up several times a day and I just close it. No reason I can't get used to Edge just like I did with Win10. I just hate that Poof its gone then you need to try and figure out where everything is. Kind of like the wife coming into my office, garage, closet or drawers. Wear did all my underwear go? I moved it over there. Why? Then you spend the next six months opening the wrong drawer first. As soon as you get used to the correct drawer. It all gets moved to another drawer.

This is the worst. At work we are still on Win 7, and still have IE so the default browser is IE. We can get FF and Chrome. (I'm personally more of a FF guy, but Chrome would by my #2 pick). We have a huge intranet with SharePoint, Confluence and 1000 other web accessible apps. It seems like it's completely random about which browser works or works best with each app. Many/most of the apps are custom or customized internally. So what I don't understand is why our developers can't make all of this sheisse work on all/most browsers. It used to be that almost everything worked on IE. Now I have to have IE, Chrome and FF because some stuff only works or works best on Chrome, some with FF, and some is still best or OK with IE.

I've got all 3 at home too. I use FF 99.99% of the time. I used Chrome .009% of the time and IE .001" of the time.

like Chrome?

If it's free, they have an angle.

THe nice thing about MS product is that they are kind of stumbling fools when it comes to being evil.

My theory is that Edge and Chrome will become the same program soon...Effectively, maybe not in actuality, for anti-Trust purposes.

cabmandone 03-14-2020 12:41 PM

I like the new Edge. It's based on chromium and works well for me. I have Chrome too but since downloading the new Edge haven't really used Chrome. I just got rid of Bing as the search engine.

Try firefox.

Chrome has the same auto update mechanism, with no exceptions allowed. Once in a while, Google might make you a guinea pig in one of their "studies".

To make sure you're protected by the latest security updates, Google Chrome can automatically update when a new version of the browser is available on your device. With these updates, you might sometimes notice that your browser looks different.
