Working 4 days a week now!

My new(ish) job...

Doing well and enjoying it but today we had a meeting with the owners and we agreed to take a day off every week to help makes ends meet. It's not an issue financially so I'm happy to go along with it but stuff like this can go South very quickly.

There's also talk of packing up the office into shipping containers and everybody working from home. That could be less than two weeks away. I've done some testing and I can work from home but it wont be as smooth as office. They can divert the phones to our mobiles so from the customers point of view nothing has changed.

I worked from home for 16 years in my last job and it's not as good as you may think.
You end up working longer than normal hours and anxiety can set in if you don't make the effort to get out more.
My daily walks helped with that but sometimes I really had to make an effort to get out of the house.

Anyway... I feel grateful that the owners aren't just shutting up shop and at least I have a living wage coming in.

What options do we really have when something like this happens?
Like it or not we all have to make do.

The separation of work-pressure/feeling tense/etc -vs- home/relaxed/comfort/explore is something to be considered.
-----
The brain of Humans like any animal needs 'down-time' and a 'safe-space' to feel secure and potential to explore.
Renew and restore. And think.
------
It is ingrained in our very nature.
The success of Hunter-Gather explains this in the long run.
The shift to agriculture and stability.
-------

So my ironic advice is to try to not to take work into the home.
-Have a separate area for different modes.
-Don't conduct work or anything other leading to bad feelings within that comfort zone.
-Don't feel stressed in bed. Change mattresses. Partners. Whatever. YMMV. Talk shyte out and know problems ahead of time.
-No political TV or internet entertainment while in bed.
-Go to sleep content.
-Get yourself outside that entire zone of thought when the inner core feels not right.

Whoever is in charge of a situation should be temporarily in charge as long as it works.
For now.

My boss stopped by to talk to us this morning. He said we were in great shape financially compared to other builders and not to worry.

As soon as he left, I thought, oh ****, it’s about to happen.

and I'm out... I got the chat this afternoon and now I'm officially unemployed!

Bill Douglas 03-27-2020 12:08 AM

Oh no.

Are you going to be OK financially?

Scary times!

sc_rufctr 03-27-2020 12:47 AM

Well my house is paid for and I have money in the bank plus some investments... So yes I'm fine.

I'll have more time to hang out with my mum. She needs to get more exercise so we're planning to walk every morning together. She makes great coffee. :)

My sister and bother are now unemployed. I’m lucky to be able to work from home. Working from home kind of sucks (imho)

You could buy a Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector and do a drive up country...
