UGH-made the appointment putting dog down
Been dreading this day but it has come , our mini daschund Mickey is going to the vet for the last time today @ 2:30
He would have been 17 next month but his quality of life has slipped to the point that it is now the right call to make . My wife and I got him as an anniversary gift , he was just a pup and fit in the palm of our hands . That was when we lived in Florida ........... we've had him so long our kids grew up with him their entire school years ! He has brought so much joy to our family just like any good dog does . Last year we had 3 weiner dogs , Sophie our only female wandered off into the woods and never returned she was 16 at the time Now Mickey will be gone that leaves us with one more our 14 year old Dexter . The house is getting quieter today is going to be rough . We are making his last few hours as good as we can , he's currently on the couch snuggling with my wife . Extra treats over the next few hours . As pet owners we all know the love and joy pets bring to us , I am 62 years old and have always had dogs in the family . But I'm not sure how many more times I want to go through this , it is just so painful . Soon Mickey ( officially his name is Michelob ) will be crossing the rainbow bridge . Thanks for letting me vent .

I'm so sorry to hear. We've got a 14 yo mini dachshund. Fortunately he's doing ok for now, but we know that it's only a matter of time. We aren't looking forward to that day.
Enjoy giving Micky treats, snuggles, love and belly rubs today.

Very sorry to hear this---but know that he loves you for taking care of him. The pain will eventually go away, even if it doesn't feel that way right now.
I'm still mourning Max after 9 months---and you're right--it does seem tougher the older I get. Keep your head up and remember all the joy Mickey brought to you and your family.

Oh no, man I ache for you. My old girl went down 5 years ago and I still miss her.
It's the right thing to do though. Remember it's the loving heart that makes the painful choice.

I’m sorry. Went through this December 26. 2nd time in 2 years. Easily some of the worst days of my life. Even worse perhaps was seeing how it effected her little brother that she basically raised from a puppy. By some miracle we rescued a dog off the street 2 weeks ago that looked like she had spent the cold winter roaming the streets. We now have 2 again.
I feel your pain.

I feel your pain. Losing a beloved pet is one of the hardest things I have endured (9 times for dogs, 4 cats and 1 horse) it doesn't get any easier. I have 2 large breed dogs now that are both 12. The hard times are coming and I hate to think about it.
RIP Mickey

So true and so important to hold dear. Like many here, we are not far from making this decision on our 16 year old Red Heeler.
To slightly alter a famous quote: "There's nothing…so good for the inside of a man as the outside of a dog."

Thanks everyone I am just kind of numb at the moment . Mickey is asleep in his bed everything seems normal at the moment . As far back as I can remember we always had a dog . My dad instilled into me to never allow them to suffer . I watched my dad make the decision many times .
It is very difficult to know when is the right time , to be honest there never is a right time . But my wife and I feel that now is the right time . Driving to the vet today is going to be ugly . |

Good morning Rick....
I'm so sorry! Mickey had a great life. What you are doing today demonstrates how much you love him. Stay strong for your family and especially for Mickey. We all know how it is tearing you apart inside. It will be the hardest thing you'll ever do. Hold onto him throughout - tell him how much you love him - and tell him everything will be alright. Peace and love to Micky.....

I feel for you. We just went thru this Feb 29th with Tessa, a husky mix we'd had since she was a puppy 12 years ago. So sorry.

One of the worst days in recent memory was when I woke up in the morning and my little friend didn't.
I couldn't bear the idea of getting another friend, but I should have. My advice is to save another dog ASAP. He'll need you. |
