Not sure what category this car belongs in, but this is our 24 Hours of LeMons/Crapcan series Porsche 951. Since 2013 it has competed in over 35 endurance races in the 24 Hours of LeMons and LuckyDog Racing League. It has competed at Laguna Seca, Sonoma Raceway, Thunderhill, Buttonwillow, Willow Springs, The Ridge in Washington and even tracked the Bahrian International Circuit.

How can a running 951 possibly be a $500 car? It helps that it was found left rotting in the desert in Bahrain for 10 years. I found it while stationed over there and managed to get it for basically nothing and the US Navy shipped it home. It was a complete disaster, two of the windows were missing so much of the interior was filled with sand, there was some flood damage to the tub, the heat had destroyed all the plastic and rubber including the shocks, engine mounts, etc. Almost nothing was salvageable from the interior and we had to replace all the wiring.
The build took about three months. It didn’t appear that coolant had ever been used in the engine and many of the water channels in the head were blocked with mineral deposits. Amazingly the internals of the engine and transmission were otherwise very clean.

I found Pelican Parts around this time and bought all the bits we needed to get it running. A complete engine refresh, ghetto Alusil hone, new rings and a lot of four letter words and we had a racecar! It’s been amazing and definitely one of the fastest vehicles to run in these series’. It took several years to get the car somewhat dialed in, we couldn’t really do much more then patch things due to the budget restrictions, but after every race we would sneak in an upgrade…a tune here, lowering ball joints there, Koni yellows painted black, etc. And now with the LuckyDog series being fully open to modifications, the car has been brought up to something approaching race reliability. 2020 was going to be our season but corona…

The car has had many themes: Tribute to Bahrian (that’s supposed to be the King on top), Naked and Afraid, Oktoberfest, sharpie spy photo camo (took about 50 sharpies to complete the work…most of it done by spectators at the track), a dragon theme and green theme and black theme for 24 hour events – yes it completed both 24s. It’s also in the Guinness book of World Records for being part of the largest road-race ever when LeMons beat the record in 2015.

I will admit we have always felt torn using such a nice car for Lemons. Because of the serious neglect, the cost to restore it was way beyond what it would have ended up being worth. There was also the fact that it was just sitting and would probably never get driven on the street. Now it gets used regularly and hard. It’s one of four racecars we have and definitely our favorite. You just can’t beat a Porsche for competition.

Thanks for all the support and quality parts over the years Pelican!

On my 27th birthday I ordered a new 1967 Slate Gray 912 through the California State Auto Association* out of a catalog for factory delivery.. Never driven one or even sat in one.. There were not many around then.. 3 months later I picked it up in Stuttgart and we took off for a 3 month camping vacation in 10 countries..The car was driven on all kinds of roads and mostly peddle to the metal ..* *Shipped back to the SF bay area were it became a daily driver commute car for about 17 years..

The car has been maintained as all original in and out. In May of 2019, (52 years),* the car had it's engine redone.. at about 186K on the dial.. It was done to factory specification.. and runs like the wind again ...This coming June 16th the car turns 53...

Slate Gray is an amazing color and never fails to turn heads..* Here is a link to Super 8 movies I shot during the delivery and camping trip , etc..*

It has been my special pleasure to have owned this car all these years and enjoyed every mile behind the wheel...* My hope is to give it back to them when I am done with it*

Most well kept old Porsche

My 1983 Porsche SC has been owned by 3, driven over 108,000 miles but is still a full concourse winner. A highly optioned car with paint to sample grey, maroon interior with sport seats and air dam front and spoiler rear as a factory option. The car is immaculate but is driven every week at least two or three times. Not just around the block....

DIY winter project

This car has been in my family for 30 years. It was originally sold in Sacramento, California in 1977. My brother and I decided to do a few repairs to the car over the winter, which included:
- recovering front seats with upholstery from Lakewell Classic Car Interiors
- cleaned and detailed entire interior
- engine tune up that included:
- new injectors
- adapters and seals
- plugs and plug wires
- cap and rotor
- valve set
- vacuum lines
- check and adjust CIS settings
- detailed engine bay, parts supplied by Pelican
- rebuilt trans shift coupler
- replaced steering column bushing
Can't wait to get out for a test drive!
