Way to be a team player, China

Quote:

China's efforts to rebrand itself as a global leader focused on humanitarian relief amid the coronavirus outbreak has hit a major snag and perhaps revealed Beijing's true intentions behind their public relations blitz.

After telling the world that it would donate masks, face guards and testing equipment to Italy, China quietly backtracked and sold the Mediterranean country desperately-needed medical equipment, according to a report.

What's worse is that the personal protective equipment (PPE) China forced Italy to buy was actually the same PPE Italy donated to China before coronavirus rushed its own shores and killed nearly 16,000 people.

ProTip: don't get your testing kits and masks at Harbor Freight

Corollary:

Stop shopping at Walmart and Costco who are little more than clearinghouses for PRC-made junk.

Change starts here. Now.

#1 - We did not replenish after distributing the masks during the 2009 H1N1 events
#2 - We sent China a bunch of PPE during the crisis. If they had been honest with the world, we would have kept out stockpiles.

Washed or unwashed?

Taiwan has their act together when it comes to pandemic prevention.

I posted this on the Harbor Freight thread, and got some pushback. Probably more appropriate here.

I hope that will be the bright spot from this. We start taking back our manufacturing and tell the communist fascists to piss off.

I don't know about that. We seem to be addicted to cheap goods more than integrity. We live in a consumer society. By choice.

Not everyone lives in that society, but yes I agree that it would be a bright spot.

If this doesn’t illustrate the error of our ways, nothing will.

One of our hospitals in Australia a friend works at got a container of PPE from China.
They opened the container, looked through the stuff and bought a skip across and binned the lot.
Not a single usable mask or gown in the entire container.
Mouldy, damaged, torn packaging for 'sterile' gear, you name it.

My hospital has critical levels of PPE left, but we've been told not to worry because "there's a container load on the way"

The guys here have mostly resigned themselves to getting COVID; no-one goes 12 months and never makes a single PPE mistake and / or has 12 months of 'good luck' every single shift.

There are multiple projects near me where students and others are creating face shields via 3d-printers.

I don't think we will ever learn unless the gov forces us to do so. When this whole thing blows over, most people will forget about what actually happened and how a little virus brought our country to its knees. We or big corp. will go right back to our old ways of getting cheaper things done around the world.

People are keen to Buy American. Until their spatula costs $2.99 versus the same product from China for $1.29.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-08/japan-to-fund-firms-to-shift-production-out-of-china?utm_source=url_link

Japan has earmarked $2.2 billion of its record economic stimulus package to help its manufacturers shift production out of China as the coronavirus disrupts supply chains between the major trading partners.

The extra budget, compiled to try to offset the devastating effects of the pandemic, includes 220 billion yen ($2 billion) for companies shifting production back to Japan and 23.5 billion yen for those seeking to move production to other countries, according to details of the plan posted online.

The move coincides with what should have been a celebration of friendlier ties between the two countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping was supposed to be on a state visit to Japan early this month. But what would have been the first visit of its sort in a decade was postponed a month ago amid the spread of the virus and no new date has been set.
