The stock 3 speed was fine until the master cylinder bolts broke and it torqued it to the side applying the brakes, breaking the brake line. The only way I could stop was to coerce it into 1st gear damaging it in the process.

I did it.
I took my 96 Land Cruiser in to a repair shop for exhaust work. Two oxygen sensors (one blown out, the other about to), Cats and some other rusted bits need to be replaced. I even, gasp, asked them to remove the trailer hitch bits while they were in there so I can have it powder-coated and I'll reinstall. Parts and labor, $1450. $1450. I'd sell a kidney not to have to work on an exhaust, especially an older LC with the original exhaust (I called my buddy who sold it to me). I'm sure all the car guys are tsk-tsking. Best. |

There is perhaps no more unpleasant task than exhaust work on an old vehicle. Rusted fasteners, dirt raining down upon you, heavy jagged bits of rusty metal, ugh. Money well spent. |
+1 to what Matt is saying.
I replaced both O2 sensors on my daughters 5.0 Mustang a few weeks ago. Thankfully they are really easy to get too and R&R. However I paid about what you did to have 1974 Heat exchangers, muffler, different tin and heating parts put on my 1978 VW bus in order to backdate it and get rid of the complicated later system. I sourced all the parts etc. with the thoughts of doing it myself and in the end decided to let a pro handle it. I am very pleased with the work he did (as usual) and I didn't have to lay on my back fighting 40 year old parts. |

I put rusty exhaust fasteners on my sandwich bread, and eat them with mustard. It's a way of life here in Pa.

I don't mind exhaust work. An angle grinder with 5" cut-off, small hand-held with 2", oxy-mapp and a proper face shield and it's pretty easy. The key to exhaust work is don't try to save anything, cut it off or melt it out. Replace it all, once, and it's done for life.
These things are fantastic for any kind of metal work involving cutting, grinding, wire brushing. A wire brush needle in your eye can ruin your whole day. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1586805786.jpg |
