Sold my lift recently, tripped on it more than I used it.... Honestly working under a car with my arms up is messing up my shoulders and hands as I get close to my 50s... Trying to save those for stuff I enjoy more, Tennis, driving....
I keep the fun little jobs, electrical, maintenance, part replacement, stuff I can do within a few hours... Anything more involved or dangerous for my lower back is now getting farmed out - besides at the moment mechanics need the work ! Also my oldies are in pretty good shape now and not much breaks - not much can be done on the modern cars without the Dealer computer ;-(

Yea I agree. My 911 just sits there waiting for “someday” like it has for years. Little to no use. The joy and romance of driving has largely gotten ruined in recent years and it’s such a chore now, plus the expense and difficulty... all to sit in traffic? Sure there are those moments :) but they’re fewer and further between sadly...

I thought I was the only one with the same feeling. I will be 70 in October and I just don't have the dexterity any more and my body just doesn't bend. For the last few years. I'm driving less and less - and the thought of selling it has crossed my mind.

Short 240 mile north Texas road trip Monday. Before everything shutdown. I’ve vowed to get the 930 out every week and have pretty much managed that since Jan 1st.

For me it’s a question of time. The last year has been terrible, three kids in sports, my wife and I both coaching, 50+ hour work weeks, travel, I had zero time for an old car. Now, in the age of CV? I’d kill for a fun car project. I’m absolutely the kind of guy that could retire and restore an old 911 bolt by bolt. It’s more fun when there’s no pressure, that’s one thing I’ve learned.

Cliff have you thought about buying something newer, fun, and just reliable? Paul’s suggestion is valid, a car that’s fun but just needs oil changes every 5k. I’ve considered it myself, particularly in the age of 0% for 84 months. A PP2 or Bullitt Mustang sounds pretty good sometimes.

Just for you Matt...Mustang haters shouldn't click.

1996 with 115K one it when I bought it. Now at 125K. It is a modern car. I looked at 40's (we had one when I was a kid) but I couldn't pull the trigger as my DD, which the LC is.

I use the trip mileage indicator and divide it (duh) by fuel used at 90% of my gas stops.

Real world (if the trip meter is accurate) is 15.5 local 16.5 on the highway, sometimes a little better. Best was 17.5 on a really easy trip with speed limits at 50mph for what seemed like days.

Mine is a Triple Locker with a lot of options, including sunroof. Good ride, average acceleration but just a heap of goodness all around.

My Tundra averages about a mile per gallon more on average so for me it is a wash.

I don't enjoy but I think because I hate starting and putting down, the fear that I won't be able to get back together and frankly I would rather spend money on my wife and I going on a trip someplace and taking in the local flavors.

If I didn't just spend so much on sales tax (all relative) in July on my 02 C4S I would sell in a minute. I am too anal and spend too much time thinking about stuff that doesn't really matter like a scratch in a bumper. Can't turn it off unfortunately.

Those are amazing mileage for the 80. I had two, a 93 and a 96, but the 96 died long ago due to rust and me beating on it out in Barstow. They both got 12-13 max in the city but hwy, the best was 15 but 14 was the norm, it mattered little if it was loaded. Rare, but I got 15 mpg coming back from Mammoth but all my hwy driving was between 70-75 mph. I want a 100LC or Lexus (same thing) and thought of selling my 5th gen 4 runner to get one but many have high milage on them whereas I only have 75,000 on my 4 runner. Daily is between the 4 runner and the Cayman.

Still love cars-some trucks --in fact im equal opportunity when it comes to appreciating things automotive. Its still a great feeling to "diy" but its great when done -no so much the doing anymore. I have no interest in what others think about my rides -- but I really do appreciate a whole spectrum of other's cars and trucks. And a lot of the guys here have some cool swag.

Like I said, it depends on how accurate the trip meter is...no big tires, etc. It does have the start in second option which I use all the time.

I do keep my foot out of it and rarely hit 70 miles per hour, which is probably the key given the transmission range (my Tundra RPM is much lower per MPH than the LC) but that is what MPG logs tell me. I swear, no thumb on the scale:cool:

Love the thing: It suits me well.

I think the trip meter is accurate enough to not make much difference in MPG within a 3-400 mile drive. I love the 80. My 93 dies of a horrible death. A young lady on her phone ran a red , hit me head on doing about 40. Her lil' BMW went under my LC from the impact. My truck was stock but has 265 tires on it. My kid and I walked away without any issue. I had a small bruise on my arm. That's one tough and safe vehicle.

Dreams become projects.
Projects become chores.
Chores become burdens.

Well I'm here to say that I'm 60 and I'm doing a full suspension rebuild on my diesel beater just for fun. Shocks, struts, OTR, ball joints, all bushings. No hoist, doing it on the floor. But I did buy a battery operated impact gun for the job.

You're all turning into pussies.

Life is short. Do what you enjoy.

I enjoy the car work more than driving, I'm the odd man out I guess.

Not by a long shot.

I think there are passages when it seems less important as we get closer to death but even Vash will feel the pull.

It's a car guy's density. :D

What happened to the young lady in the BMW?

It's 70 degrees here and sunny today!
I took both the Speedster and my '65 VW for rides today, and took a reading.
YEP! I'm still a car guy!

Nothing. Airbag went off destroyed the entire front portion of her car. I think it was one of those little bmw like a 318, low and small. She walked off and started combing her hair, adding make up back on sitting on the side of the road waiting for the cop to arrive. They came within minutes. Someone must have called. we were lucky.

gregpark 04-07-2020 06:04 PM

I hope they broke her phone
