I'm one of those people. There have been studies showing how long the virus can survive on surfaces. It can survive for hours on stainless steel and plastic - these are the kinds of surfaces you touch when going to the grocery and checking out.
Without gloves I touch the door handles and card reader key pad and then go to my car and touch the door handle, steering wheel, etc. surrounding myself with possible contamination.
With gloves I leave the store and strip them off and drop them in the trash. No possible contamination from my hands to my car.
It may be overkill, but it doesn't cost much and it makes MrsWD happy.
As for they eyes, you don't inhale through your eyes, so you aren't drawing possibly contaminated air to them. You have to walk into it or have it sprayed at you to bring contaminated air into contact with your eyes. When you breath you are drawing possibly contaminated air towards you.
