Dash cam footage of traffic stop fatal shooting
I'd be interested in reaction from any law enforcement members who post here.
Hindsight is always crystal clear, and I'm sure the Oregon state police will analyze this and use it in training for years. Personally, I was impressed with how the officers responded during a dangerous period. Marion County Grand Jury ruled all actions justified... 17 minute video...sound on: https://www.oregonlive.com/#news youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4JFYn0XAQU&feature=emb_logo

Without body cam footage it’s hard to say from the video. Most likely it was justified. What’s crazy is how they all were in each other’s crossfire and the lack of concern for passers by. Total panic scenario. I have nothing but respect for the Highway Patrolmen that work at night on I5.

Easy to be an armchair quarterback and I may be completely wrong but my thoughts:
1) the side of the road is always the wrong place to disagree with law enforcement. You cannot win. Just go to court or another avenue when you are not as vulnerable. 2) if you are told to keep your hands on the steering wheel - that's what you do. ESPECIALLY if your hand gun is in view and within' reach. 3) why didn't someone move the gun from within' the driver's reach right away? Driver could have been asked to step out even, just to remove that potential threat. Without body cam footage - hard to get into too much diagnostics. I think this was avoidable - but so are so many other things if stupidity and ignorance wasn't so prevalent. It is what it is.....

Certainly looked completely justified, but
1. Why didn't the troopers control the situation from the get-go? Have the guy exit the vehicle and cuff him. As soon as you see the sketchy situation, why let it go south (curtains closed, gun, reckless driving, etc). 2. When they shot the guy, why didn't they shut down the freeway in both directions? 3. Why let the guy bleed out? They waited a long time to call for an ambulance, and then left the guy in charge of when he was to exit the vehicle, and under what circumstances. 4. Talk about a circular firing squad. Jeeezus. |
