And God bless Betty Cantor :)!

Those PCM "Betty boards" from the early 70s....through a modern "wall of sound"...yes indeedy!

Damn hippies ;)

The thing not mentioned as with anything else, the more extreme you go the more maintenance it requires and seemingly the stuff seems to escalate in fragility.

Only if by "extreme' you mean outdated and finicky analog/tube gear.

You will thank yourself if/when you do. Especially if you acquire a decent catalog of HD source material and a solid-state set-up with the resolving power to reproduce it accurately. And that doesn't require a ton of money, relatively speaking. ;)

To me, it's one of life's modern miracles that we can have the treasure trove of their music, 2060 shows, crystal clear sound boards on a phone, in my pocket.

Who would have thunk.

Ziggythecat 04-25-2020 10:06 AM

I can't say enough good things about these.
Astounding sound and wireless connection between the speakers.

Go ahead Eric....tell us the rest of the story!

Don't be modest either ;)

Betty taped on a rtr. Then left em in a storage locker, where a head found them at a locker auction. They are back in the hands of the band now, but they circulated for years prior on the torrents.

Yeah, my phone reproduces this almost perfectly!

Once you get past $1000, there ain't more returns

Not true for speakers

Likely true for DACs

BTW, anyone interested in actual facts on high end audio, and comments by some of the engineers in the industry can look here:

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php

It is measurement biased, and lacks double-blinded listening test data (perhaps b/c that is lacking in general).

The Dead have always pushed the art of amplified music. Beside the 2 semi-trucks required to move the Wall of Sound, there is also the use of a 'hidden' timing signal on tapes to reduce wow & flutter, which starts with DP in the 30s IIRC.

not to mention the HDCD use on many releases

I think by "extreme" he is referring to high end, even solid state needs a rebuild sooner or later, new capacitors anyways, just part of the deal. My two mark Levinson amps will need power supply caps sooner or later, prob sooner, about $700 for parts each amp, same with modern tube gear the life of some tubes is quite low depending how hard it is run. But there is no doubt once into higher end products they can sound better, is it worth it? I enjoy it so it is worth the cost, sort of like is a $2k paint job as nice as a 10k paint job, some people can't tell the difference, is it 5x better?

Really have not stopped upgrading, at least looking.

It's all in there, thanks to archive.org
The trick is to get it out, and it's not that hard.

My 5 speaker surround is kick arse.

My front middle speaker is a small Realistic that is a 4 inch woofer and 1 inch tweeter that is well balanced. Ot actually sits behind my big screen.

My front surround are dbx SF-250. They have 2 1 in tweeters and 2 4 inch mids with at 10 inch woofer. They are called Sound Field design. You can put you head next to one and it does not effect the stereo image. The woofers are big enough to cover any base so no subs needed. They produce this perfect stereo image without any surround. better with.

My rears are Boston Acustics Dipole ceiling mounted and do ondirect reflecting. You have to get right next to one of them to tell if they are putting out any sound. Great for the rear surround reflections.

Have a Sony Receiver that does the surround sound. It has a mic and tunes the output to the speakers to keep the frequencies balanced, including the woofers/subs in the front surrounds.

The end result is an excellent surround environment that makes the entire room the sweet spot. Have not seen or heard any surround systems like it. They all have a small sweet spot. Have had people say wow, they want surround sound after hearing my system.

Music and movies have been coded with surround sound since 1972.
In the 80's music started being re-mastered for digital recordings. They compressed the dynamic range to keep from clipping the louder sections. A single violin playing piano to full orchestra playing forte is more than the 100 db limit of digital media.

So it does depend on your source.

I just added to my system a Klipsch RC-64III center channel speaker. It was pretty pricy but I am completely blown away at the sound quality. The speaker is huge and weighs in at 60lbs. 4 6.25" drivers and a horn tweeter - each in a sub-divided enclosure.

I was already very happy with my front Klipsch speakers but this new center channel ties everything together. For general music listening, it is outstanding. For surround....well, I haven't tested it yet as I just installed this last night. I was up most of the night listening to music and I just could not believe the high quality sound.

Unfortunately, I mis-measured my cabinet and the speaker was .25" too wide to fit into the opening. I was bummed but figured out a way to make it work that involved a jigsaw. Doors closed, and it will never be seen.

24 years in the military finished off any appreciation I have for high-end stereo equipment. But I still like kicking it old-school.

Nice setup Kurt.
Is that an RT-707 deck?

Close. Is the RT-701. No auto reverse.

Scott Douglas 08-18-2020 06:23 PM

Good solid deck.
My 707 is the only working piece of my similar vintage stuff that still works, sadly.

edit - I take that back. My Sony turntable still works too.

I have a mix of audio gear in different locations...

A Dynaco ST35 tube amp powering original 1960s vintage Advent Model 6s.

A Rega Elex-R amp with Rega Planar 2 turntable playing through Tannoy Sterlings.

Phase Linear 400 II and 3500 II playing through Vandersteen 2Cs (my old college stereo) in the garage.

Love the sound of each system...
