The amazing and little known Black Mouth Cur
![]() (not my dog, stock photo) I am struck almost every day about what a unique and wonderful dog the Black Mouth Cur is. We adopted ours about 1.5 years ago. I had previously only heard the term Black Mouth Cur and didn't really know anything about them. I am in Oregon and we just don't have these dogs here. Ours came from Texas. It seems that Oregon uses more dogs than we make and Texas makes more dogs than they use! Lemonade from lemons! The BMC is a Southern all around working dog. Herding. Hunting, and protecting. They are known for hunting everything from squirrels to hogs. Ours has an amazing nose, very good hearing and eyesight. He is super athletic. While on the smaller side for a BMC at 47 pounds, he is far more fierce per pound than I see with other dogs. If the wrong person comes in our house without an OK from us, he will put his teeth into them. He has not yet done this but I have a certainty that he would. It is just how he rolls. He is not aggressive. He loves other dogs and people. But, he is protective. Two different things altogether. By comparison, I have had a Samoyed (stupid, beautiful, catlike) as a kid. A Golden Retriever (wonderful, needy) and two Labrador Retrievers (amazing, loving, almost perfect). But, our BMC is different from my other dogs. He is certainly a pain in the rear. Stubborn? Yes. Prey oriented. Absolutely. But he is also the most engaging dog I have ever met. My entire family seeks him out all day long to play, go for walks, hang out, etc. He is more bonded to humans than other dogs I have been around. I am convinced that he would gladly give his life for us without question. Last night I got out of bed after reading a while. When I came back, my wife asked "did you just say goodnight to Charlie?" I said that I did. She gave me a look and a smile. I said to her "after you had already tucked him in." It is true. I have three teens (that I love and am close to) at home but I only said goodnight to my dog. That is why I am writing this. That BMC has just captured our hearts. Anybody else have any BMC experience? |

Cur dogs have long been popular in Louisiana. It's even the unofficial nickname of the Catholic High football team in Baton Rouge.

Makes sense. They are very similar to a Catahoula (sp?) for field work. Although they look nothing like each other.

I've no experience with the BMC, but I know what a damn fine dog is - and yours is a damned fine dog.

i have a soft spot for "regional" dogs.
i've never seen a black mouth cur. i imagine if i had, i would have thought it was some mutt. ![]() around here, we have the McNab. a northern California breed. i see them riding on flatbed trucks all the time. no rails. just smart farm dogs. again, looks like a mutt. ![]()

Agreed. Great Dane. No argument.
I did look up McNab. I have seen similar but never noticed them. Interesting... |
