Talk about bullet proof breasts!

Talk about bullet proof breasts!

A woman's life was likely saved by her silicone breast implants after she was shot in the chest at close range while walking down a street in Toronto, doctors have said.

The 30-year-old's left breast implant deflected the bullet away from her vital organs into the other breast, according to a case study published last week in the SAGE medical journal.

The incident, which occurred in 2018, is one of only a handful of cases where a woman was saved by her breast implants and is believed to be the first involving silicone ones, the study said.

The patient, who was not named, went to the local emergency department in the Canadian city after feeling pain in her chest and seeing blood.

Surgeons found a single entry wound and retrieved a bullet from below her right breast, which police forensics later determined was a copper jacketed 0.40 caliber, the study said.

They removed her implants and photographs with the study and CT scans show the bullet passed through her left implant and hit her right one.

"Based on trajectory of bullet entry clinically and evaluation radiologically, the only source of bullet deflection of the bullet is the left breast implant," it said.

"This implant overlies the heart and intrathoracic cavity and therefore likely saved the woman's life."

Surgeon Giancarlo McEvenue, who wrote the case study, told CNN the bullet entered the woman's left side and ricocheted across her sternum into the right breast.

"The implant caused the change in the trajectory of the bullet," he said.

"On the left hand side is the heart and lungs -- if the bullet would have gone into the chest, she would have had a much more serious, possibly life-threatening injury."

Despite being shot in the chest at close range, the woman escaped relatively unscathed with a fractured rib and damaged implants.

Ballistic Silicone

I am not an expert but ballistics speak against this being possible. A 40 caliber copper jacketed bullet fired from close range should have penetrated and not deflected.

And if she was in a distressed state driving to the hospital and crashed they could have saved her life twice in the same day by working as air bags.

Totally agree.

A friend was shot at close range with a .22 pistol and it went through both legs (sort tissue only) and out the other side.

yup, not just should have, I'm pretty sure would have is more appropriate.

Marines, listen up men, "You are all going to boob job. It is going to save your lives someday".

The news story is very poorly written, leaving one key area very much in doubt: Was she shot by someone standing on her left side, or was she shot by someone standing in front of her?

If it was someone standing to her left, and the bullet entered her left boob from the left side then stopped in her right boob, that would be about the same performance we see in very similar ballistic gelatin. The story says the bullet glanced off of her sternum after penetrating the left boob, indicating the bullet went through it at a very shallow angle from her left side.

The rest of the story sounds like pure sensationalism. If the above is the case, her boob in no way "saved her life". Makes for a good, attention getting story, but it would simply not be the case.

It is incredibly unlikely that, if the bullet entered from her front, that the silicone in her boob would have "turned" it off path at close to 90 degrees. I've seen heavy bone masses do that in animals I've killed, but never soft tissue. Especially not with a trundling, low velocity handgun bullet. I'm sure it happens often with very high velocity varmint bullets, but in those cases, the carnage is so great as to render it impossible to determine just went were. Lots of secondary wound channels from bone fragments and pieces of the disintegrated bullet. But, in each and every case I've recovered bullets that stayed in one piece in game animals, they went straight unless they hit heavy bone. Even most of those go straight.

It's all about form... i'm sure it wasn't the first time she'd taken a pop shot to the chest.
