The first photo looks like a weeping/mini Cherry tree. That's all I've got.

fintstone 04-28-2020 07:54 AM

The second one looks like a somewhat-leggy Rhododendron...or a mountain laurel. They look a lot alike.

and a Magnolia (3rd)

Seahawk 04-28-2020 08:06 AM

According to my MG wife, working from home) her input is:

- Cherry Tree
- PJM Rhododendron
- Either a Magnolia or Dogwood - She would need a better picture and would like to see the bark.
- Same as above.

First time we have talked in a week:cool:

White blooming tree appears to be Dogwood - 4 petals per bloom. Magnolia blooms would be much larger than what appears visible in the pictures.

masraum 04-28-2020 08:52 AM

close-up pics of leaves and flowers help.

Sooner or later 04-28-2020 08:57 AM

Last two dogwood

Yeah, but if you catch the closer pick in the last shot...

This. ^

pretty poor pict's for easy ID

sammyg2 04-28-2020 09:24 AM

I was gonna say "wood" but thought better of it.
DOH!

Tobra 04-28-2020 10:18 AM

I think Seahawk's supervisor has it

fintstone 04-28-2020 10:34 AM

Yep...I thought those blooms and the bark on that tree did not look like dogwood. More like serviceberry. But, hard to tell with those photos.

Bill Douglas 04-28-2020 12:53 PM

Photo two, with the crimson flowers, are amazing. There was a tree on one of my dog walks and I used to look left then right, then bring these beautiful flowers home to brighten the house.

RWebb 04-28-2020 01:07 PM

agree with the above posts - could be in those families if not the species

Bill, you can call your Agr. Ext Service - may be at Cornell - and ask for more info

they will want to see or see photos of the flowers & leaves

or at least have the shape of the leaves & # petals/flower described to them

Bill Verburg 04-28-2020 02:30 PM

Thanks guys!
I bought the house last spring and wasn't paying much attention to the landscaping except for the fact that the p/o's had spent a lot on it. Most of the trees and shrubs have tags but those don't, I'm just curious.

I'll try to take some close ups of the flowering parts, the tall ones up on the wooded hillside are probably out of reach

RWebb 04-28-2020 03:28 PM

Drone with a macro lens?

- good way to keep busy

Bill Verburg 04-29-2020 06:36 AM

Do these help?

The first is not dogwood...looks like magnolia, the second rhododendron and the third looks like a vine in a tree vice a tree.

masraum 04-29-2020 09:53 AM

I'm far from expert, but the first does look like some sort of magnolia.
The second (pink) looks like an azalea to me. < edit > That explains why I thought it was an azalea, probably a rhododendron < /edit >
I've got no idea about the last.

Quote:

Rhododendrons and azaleas, both from the genus Rhododendron, have long been mainstays of late spring because of their spectacular clusters of showy blooms—plus, large green leaves that often stay green through winter.

The flowers are tubular-, funnel-, or bell-shaped—and often fragrant. The leaves of the smaller azalea are usually pointed and narrow; the leaves of the rhododendron are generally large and leathery.

john70t 04-29-2020 11:43 AM

Third one might be flowering pear? Dogwood? Without leafs it's hard to say.

RWebb 04-29-2020 01:00 PM

#1 almost looks like a camillia or related - you really need a naturalist to ID them

(a modern botanist likely won't be able to do it as they are focused on photosynthetic pathways, plant defensive compounds, yada yada)

so if you do contact Cornell ask fro the Agr. Ext. service not the botany dept. (which is like non-existent these days)

greglepore 04-29-2020 05:23 PM

Theres an iphone app (picture this) that'll id these. It has a 7 day free trial.

First is a cherry, second a rhodie-this early likely pjm but man its big for one, and third def magnolia stellata of some hybrid. Last I can't tell.
