Looking for lightweight seats

The seats in my 85 VW Cabriolet project were junk, into the dumpster they went. They were fairly light. I didn't weigh them but probably 30 pounds each. Given the 90 hp, I want to keep weight down. Probably removing the entire convertible top to save an honest 75 pounds if not more.

Looking for some seats that will fit aesthetically and are light. Lotus Esprit seats are 35# each and look the part.

Any other seats that would work? Have thought about putting some Momo fixed back buckets in but want an easier time getting in and out of the car. That and they won't look quite right.

You can do an awful lot about that 90 hp

Also, Audi seats will be nicer and probably drop right in. Simplest thing might be to hit a wrecking yard. Is it just the front seats?

914 seats are light as hell

Have one of these in the drivers position of the exige. If it will fit in an exige, it will fit in anything.

Light, comfortable, look cool............cheap for CF I guess but still quite expensive.

Interesting idea Bill, maybe for stage 2 of the project. Was going to be a nice restoration but instead I'm just getting it derivable for fun, then do little things while driving it. Making seats for it is definitely a stage 2 sort of thing. New starter motor got it running last weekend. Looking at brakes this weekend. Then I just have to get a seat and check all ancillaries so it passes inspection.

Toby, 914 seats are a great option for now, thanks, may go that route. Cheap and will be easy to mount.

Aschen and nb, I like those seats a lot and think they'd be best for my M491.

76, sent you a PM.

Looks great which model is it?

I'm now thinking fixed back may be a good option as I remember using the windshield frame to pull yourself up and out of the car when I had a Targa. I have a Momo Corse in my coupe now and you have to pull yourself out using the door sill. At 52 it's not a big deal and I love the feeling of the seat but it's not always the best option.

The carbon w1. Used some generic brackets, basically two angle pieces bolted together then bolted to the stock rails

Another vote for Tillet, never sat in one but they make some of the lightest seats out there

Find a nice pair from the 83/84 Rabbit GTI. really comfortable sport seats and they'll drop right in. Don't forget your car has some funky mounting arrangement

Not as light as the Tillet seats but the recaro Sportster is a lighter seat(30ish lbs) and is going to have some more padding and is adjustable. Very comfy seats.

I’m sure you know this, but stay away from those super cheap seats if you value your life.

MK1 and 2 seats are unobtainium I've found. Unique 3 point mounting system but easy to put anything else in given the floor and rails.

Thanks Sid. I'm liking the Tilletts based on weight and price. If I can take 200 pounds out of the car (seats, ac, top), that's meaningful.

It will be a long while, maybe never, that I put a 2.0 Turbo into the car.

If you are my size they are hellish uncomfortable after an hour. Put some in my 250 (B5s) and couldn’t wait to get them out.

Fixed back will be lightest and you probably do want a legit seat just in case you get T-boned by some drunk. Porsche GT3, Recaro Profi, Cobra Imola Pro are all light weight, nice looking, and reasonably comfy for a fixed back seat. I had Cobras in my Boxster for 5 years and they probably saved 80lbs over the stock seats.

Race seats on the street suck. Glad I have only had to do the max of two hours in one. Don't know why you would want one on the street. No padding, no adjustment.

Word to the wise: 914 seats are light but are not supportive and quickly become uncomfortable on longer drives due to lack of much seat padding.
