Elissa 24 Hours Post Transplant

As Elissa's Dad today has been one of the best days of my life. From her CF friends and her internet group she thought her surgery was going to last 12-14 hours and having delayed closure on her chest cavity for 5 days and be on a vent for 4-5 days.
WE were shocked when the surgery was in fact 6.5 hours and her total O.R. time was 8 hours.
Her chest was a full closure only with 7 chest tubes to keep her new lungs inflated.
We had a video conference with her nurse at 3:30 this afternoon and we got to say hello to her but she still had the vent breathing for her and we felt she looked really good. Heck 3 hours later she is calling us on her phone wanting to talk. I could not believe it less than 14 hours after leaving the O.R. she is placing phone calls. Then a half hour
later several friends call me and said they were just talking on the phone with her and they were shocked to get a call from her. I have seen people down for days after dental surgery. Tomorrow she has to walk the halls of the DUKE hospital. So proud of her.

MAY 8 4:33 PM IS OFF VENT! I Just got off the phone with sweet Elissa Hase. She is in pain, but breathing on 4L of O2 on her own with her new lungs. A huge step in 24 hours. Only 8 hours after post op!!!
She has her phone and may or may not text, but she can communicate.
She will start getting nutrition tonight.

Amazing- been following for years. Gary I remember you sharing her text number around Christmas maybe 4 or 5 years ago asking for a few of us to cheer her up.

Can we get a nice bouquet to her room from us? Peter, maybe?
