Replica model 911 engine kits

In absence of the real deal, I'll have to be content with models. I started looking at model engine kits you build. One stood out on Amazon, which is also on sale with host, same kit, different sources, different prices. Looks like mostly plastic, but still fairly realistic. 1:4 scale. I'm guessing if an all metal kit is available it would cost five figures.

I have some of these 1:18 replica cars, but you don't build them.

I really like that early 911 model.

As a kid, I always enjoyed building models, but I didn't usually do paint or decals. I'd build the models and that was it.

Interesting, 1/4 scale Porsche flat 6. That's really cool. I'll have to check that out.

I see that Amazon has the 4 cyl, 4 cam type 547 too. I see the cams, but I don't see any time chains.

Still, looks pretty darn cool.

It sounds like the Museum version of the 6-cyl includes a fancy book for an extra ~$40 that the regular version doesn't include, but otherwise they are the same. the 6 cyl version says that the cams are turned by a belt, so I guess that's why no chain.

It's cool that it doesnt glue together, it all screws together and the screwdriver is included. Also, apparently, comes with a motor and some LEDs to make the motor turn, the LEDs simulate the spark plugs firing and there's even some sound that is played when it's "running".

My grandson isn't old enough yet, but that might not stop me.

Very cool collection. I've seen the Porsche engine--our host sells the same model, and it was on sale a bit ago.

I'm looking for a well-detailed 1:18 Indycar.

If I had lots of money and space, I'd probably be on some sort of Exoto frequent purchaser plan.

I want one of these - the AutoArt 804. Spendy at over 200 bucks, but it would be a nice addition to my collection of silver 1/18 German cars....

Model Factory Hiro makes some pretty awesome stuff. Their build-able models look have an amazing amount of detail and there's a bunch of metal parts on them. I only see the 911 RSR Turbo on their site at the moment, but they have 917/20 Pink Pig and a whole bunch of other cool cars and race cars. Looks like the full detail kits range around $700-$800 for their full detail kit.

Exoto was not that expensive 12 years ago, $200 or less, and good sales. Not any more.

Right, that's the one at top of the list and you have the best price. The 1:12 scale is too small and too expensive.

Yeah, the price of model cars has gone up so high, but I still collect them. Mostly 1/43 ones though, as I don't have enough space for hundreds of 1/18's.

Picked up this 1/18 911S a few months back...

You're dead on about display space. All but two of mine stay in their boxes in a closet 99% of the time. My heirs will fight about them thinking they are worth something.

This was the ultimate 911 engine kit. Only about 50 kits were made and only 10 were assembled at the Marushin factory in Japan. I was very lucky to have one of the 10.
It ran on compressed air and rev'd up when you "stepped" on the pedal. About 18 inches long. Hundreds of actual working parts.

I used to have an unbuilt version of that kit. I sold it when they started trading for fairly large dollars.

Looks like someone had one for sale not too long ago on Pelican. $1200...too rich for a desk toy in my book but very cool.

Sounds like that one needed a complete rebuild!

I found mine at the Porsche Lit Meet about 25 years ago. A guy had it on his table running it and it attracted a lot of attention but no buyers. He was asking $1500.
I did really good selling at my table and at the end of the show I went over as he was packing it up and offered a grand. I went home with it.

I sold it ten years ago for a lot of $ but still regret selling it.

I really like the ones that cost mid-four figures, but I think I'll try the one on sale here for starters.




It's replacing garage art. I sold two long boards, doubled my money and made twice what the model cost. It's almost a freebie.



I can't ride anymore anyway.
