Weather Station
Getting tired of carrying my ladder down to the boat house to reset my La Crosse weather station.
What is everyone using? |
I used to have a La Crosse station. When it went belly up I got one of these:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589388111.JPG Acurite is the name hidden by the yellow towel. Works well for us. I've had to replace batteries about once a year or so on avg. |
Davis Vantage Pro 2.
Wife thought I was crazy when I put it up 10 years ago, now she watches it more than I do. Had to replace the anemometer, and resolder a raingauge sensor. I have to go up on the roof every 1-2 years. Solar powered, on same small battery for 10yrs. Worth every penny. Gary |
I use Alexa.
She is usually spot-on. |
Channel 2...it's free ;)
|
I look out the window ......... even free-er 😁

[QUOTE=masraum;10863877]My problem here in houston is that when you ask for Houston weather, they might be giving you weather from someplace 30-60 miles away. 30-60 miles can mean 20*, rain or shine, windy or not. I don't want to know the weather somewhere else. I want to know MY weather.
You might be able to fix that by changing your location to your zip code in the settings. I live in a small rural area..and her/their forecast is unique to my area. |
I've had an AcuRite 01540M (actually an older, similar model to this) for maybe seven or eight years. It's mounted on a pole in the open about 125 ft. away from my house. I think I changed the batteries once and looked at them last year again. They were fully charged. The solar panel which powers the fan also assists the batteries. I paid about $60 at Costco when they had them on sale. The new, similar models seem to cost around $120. If it died, I'd get a replacement.

Davis Vantage Pro for 15 years. It has been great and very accurate compared with nearby Weather Underground stations. My anemometer just recently stopped reporting but I think it is rodent damage to the connecting wires. Older tech but very high build quality.

I push a button and say "Hey Siri what's the weather?"
|
I have this one that i got for Christmas 2015. Has been working fine since.

^^ Ouch! Looks fookin freezin on Valentine's Day in Vermont!

Thanks gents. This was the information I was looking for.
The Davis series are nice, but pricey. Lots of AcuRite versions out there. I didn't really think about the solar powered ones, now it might be the way I will go. |
15 years ago I got the Davis Vantage Vue for my dad as a Christmas present. As a retired pilot he loved it. When he died, I took it down, and it has been at my house for well over 10 years. I had to replace the anemometer plastic part that catches the wind from when a hail storm broke the plastic part.
We had a thunderstorm come though last night. It is just interesting to know we received 0.86 inches of rain last night. |

I’ve wanted a Vantage for years. However, I’m too chicken to get on my roof (3 stories up there, no access except by ladder).

I figure my sensors are all a compromise location for my property. The only part of the yard that gets sun for the solar cells on the outdoor part and some decent access to wind and open completely for the rain is the spot it is in. Yea, temp may be a little off, but the rainfall is the biggest data point we care about.
Right now the winds are up because of area thunderstorms. Averaging 9 MPH winds, 95% humidity outside and 77 degrees with a heat index of 80. We are likely to get some rain soon. |
OK, weather geeks:
since my post above the temperature has dropped to 66, humidity down to 78% and the heat index in now 68. Winds are gusting 10 to 12 MPH. A front came through and we got no rain at all but it is a lot cooler out there. Typical Oklahoma weather, always changing. |
Yep, I miss watching the wild temp/humidity swings when a front comes through.
I always found dew point to be a better indicator of comfort than humidity. |
We measure the wind by how far the grill blows across the yard after breaking the post it is tied to.
