Agree! Calumet Fisheries on the southeast side, it's Hagens on the north side.

I smoke my own but it is just not the same.

The Great British Chefs website did a review. Interesting Lidl had one they rated pretty highly.

IIRC, all of the NZ salmon are farm-raised from the Pacific.

Well, all of the fresh-caught upper PNW salmon that is...with my personal experience (and bias) being Kings caught in the mouths of certain rivers, and off the coast of AK.

Thanks everyone so far for your input. Good stuff.

Me personally.......I've just bought salmon filets and cooked them at home.

I don't know why Mom is so in love with the smoked stuff from mail order. The last stuff she got was a Mothers Day present from her daughter-in-law and she gave it to me to give to my dogs because "it's the cheap stuff and doesn't taste very good."

Hence the purpose of the thread.

Maybe I should make some of the salmon for her myself that I usually get locally and see if that suffices.

I gotta also tell my sister-in-law to quit sending her that "cheap stuff that doesn't taste very good." :D

Woof woof...

Completely different flavor and texture to the west coast US variants. I prefer the Scottish - its smooth and glossy and full of flavor.

farm-raised oceanic fish are best avoided

farm-raised catfish are best sought after

Hagans is on Montrose just west of Central. https://www.hagensfishmarket.com/

I think you are thinking of the Fish Keg The Fish Keg That's on Howard Street. Both places have been in business for a very long time.

edit: That H&D stuff is pricey.

Quick update.....

I just finished cooking some Atlantic Salmon I picked up at Walmart. It was less than $7!

Pan fried in butter - which is how I've always cooked my salmon.

As always it was ABSOLUTELY delicious! :p

No...it wasn't smoked. But for my Mom - I think it will fit the bill for her and this will be my solution for now.

There are many different ways of cooking it but salmon is salmon.

EDIT: I forgot to mention - I rinsed it off really well and let it dry before cooking. Also seasoned it well with Everglades seasoning.
