Nearest varieties of Oak should provide a big clue as to what you're looking at. White Oaks tend to appreciate more sandy soil. Red Oak does well in clay. That you have lots of Maples might suggest more clay.

At our old home, we had pecans pop up all of the time. those things have a serious tap root. There was one that I must have cut off level with the ground 200 times, and every time it tried to grow back.
