Really? They could not come up with a better idea than THAT? They could have hit a leg artery with the machete, the snake could have turned out to have been MUCH bigger and broken that dude in half, it could have been a cobra in a python hole, or a mongoose, etc etc.

It likely is what they were taught by the elders. "This is how you catch a big snake and feed the village" and it seems to work. I am just really glad I don't have to hunt snakes to have food.
