the Carwash vacumn system. is it okay to......?

say i have a friend. he is a tiny bit OCD. nice guy, super handsome.

lets just say he takes his Shop-Vac filter and dropped it into a 5-gallon bucket, and then takes his Pontiac Aztec (with the bucket in the trunk/hatch) to the car wash where the crew scrubs the exterior to a shine. then this guy, goes to the self serve vacuum section and vacuums the interior and then takes the super powerful vacuum and cleans the filter.

BS or okay?

I know a guy who might have a shop vac that also has a blow function. He might just go out in the front yard and blow out the filter.

After doing that he might have just bought a new filter instead of doing the said method again.

The car wash vacuums are heavy duty...they can stand that.

I think it really depends on which side of the filter he vacuums from.

Wait, you are supposed to buy new filters? All this time I was cleaning the filter best I could, then going to the alley with my air compressor to clean it out better. Who knew?

If he is going to the coin operated self serve, he is paying for the time.

I don't think that is unreasonable. What would be if he took all of his oily greasy shop towels down to the local laundry and washed them there.

I just wash my shop vac filter with a hose shutoff nozzle twisted to a stiff spray. Spray the outside first, being sure to get between the cleats, then spray the inside, giving it a backwards flow. Then hang it to drip and air dry. Usually buy filters 2 at a time, so I'll always have at least one ready to use since the drying can take time.

After washing the filter, into the house to clean my glasses of the overspray.

Don't see how a car wash vac would hurt anything. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

(edit) I have extensions and a kit that allows me to clean the house gutters with a shop vac while staying on the ground. At my age, don't trust my balance on a roof.

It's quite an upper body workout, but it seems to work. All of the vac gets a washing after that one...pretty messy job. Natch, keeping water away from the vac motor, but everything else is washable, including the inside of the hose.

Are you talking about pleated paper type filters? I have always been afraid to get those wet. On water vacuum jobs, I pull them out.

I did buy a spiffy fiber type that was meant to be washable. Looked like the kind of element the K&N car filters have.

As to the free car wash vacuums, I say go for it. Beats the cloud of dust from the air hose in the driveway.

Up to this point I thought this would be a really long build-up to a cringe-inducing post about your perv friend.

A true OCD guy would not let a cash wash staff go anywhere near his car with those dirty rags.
Can you say swirl and scuff the clear coat?
