My “cars I want most” list from childhood started with a 911 and a 2002 came right after. I actually had a dream about driving an Inka roundie tii when I was a teenager. I’ve got the 911, so logically a 2002 would be next. I’ve never even driven one, but I don’t at all doubt they’d live up to expectations (and my high school car was a 320iS). I’ll get to drive one this summer. But I’ve also had a big thing for Bavarias since high school and those are still so cheap that that’s more likely what I’ll actually get.

Never mind old BMWs. In the UK prices of Mk 1 and MK2 Ford Escorts and Cortinas are absolutely crazy high Just a shell, even a 4 door Escort( ripe for conversion to 2 door if you have the time and money) and is madness, any shell not just a twin cam or aLotus Cortina

I bought this '72 in '77 and then again years later. I missed it so much I bought it back from the guy I sold it to, so I guess I'm the second and fourth owner. The second time around it got a body off, nut and bolt restoration with all the appropriate upgrades and mods. I still love this little guy

I just traded my 1976 2002 for a 77 911s widebody. Well I traded the 2002, a subaru wrx, and a bit of cash... but still i did it.



I got a dreamcar (version of my dreamcar), but im going to miss that 2002 and will liekly get another in the next 5 years. Such a great little runabout.

When I bought my 2002 in HS, 1975, my Mom was very intrigued. She loved the car.

She ended up buying the first 3 Series in SC in 1976, model year 1977, I think.

The 3 series was as much a revelation as the 2002.

I had a ‘76. I backdated the bumpers and raced it in SCCA’s ITB class for several years, then sold it to another guy who still races it. What a great car!!

Thanks, it won a couple of peoples choice awards in shows years back when I used to show it. The major renovation was finished in '89 but I keep it garaged, keep it nice and keep it up. 0 rust on this one. The single stage paint still looks new, just clay bar it every 10 years

Drove mine today to grab lunch... Guy in a 356B/C cab stopped next to me and was complimenting me... Ironic, I was lusting after his 356. There's not been a single time I've driven this car and not had a thumbs up, conversation or smile or wave. Orange helps, but still... I love driving it and the kids enjoy the room out back vs the 911 ;-) I tell ya, buy now before they get out of reach !

ok... BMW 2002 vs. Alfa GTV ??

I have a well developed '69 Alfa Spider race car, and race against 2002s in my class in our local vintage race club SOVREN here in the Pacific Northwest. More accurately, I give them space when they roar by me. These BMWs are race-prepped and lightened beyond what was available in the golden years of SCCA racing of the late '60's, because they are now competitive like never before. Crazy fast. Our best-funded GTVs seem to struggle to keep up.

I respect them, but they piss me off.

Oh boy, I owned both at the same time, even wrote a review comparing both, if interested I can dig it up... Bottom line: the alfa is way prettier, the BMW way more comfortable to drive. Also more of an aftermarket and cheaper. Performance is about the same, like for like. The reputation of the Alfa engine is way overrated in my book, it's a 4 cyl, whoop dee doo, especially coming from a porsche flat 6... The alfa gave me sciatica from the driving position (knees under your chin, planet of the apes style), it's got more of a sense of occasion, it feels more special, like a mini Ferrari or something. The bimmer is more "cute" and trouble free.. Picture the alfa as a crazy monica belluci, and the bimmer as the cute girl next door... One you should date once, one you should marry ;-) I sold it and kept the bimmer because they're virtually the same car functionally, but the bimmer was less hassle - also I was not upside down on the Alfa but that's on me. But I can't deny the Alfa is so damn pretty !

Did the engine music from the Alfa sound a lot better than from the 2002?

Hmm, I'd say stock the Alfa sounds better engine wise. But my 2002 has a sebring center exhaust that sounds very fruity... The killer in the alfa for me is "can you fit in one", at least more than 15 minutes... I'm 6ft tall and normally proportioned, I had to remove the stock gas pedal and make something up to attach over the pedal rod so I could unfold my right leg... Then I moved the seat back, I rigged spacers for the angle (too laid back, like a lounger sofa)... And still I felt like a gorilla, you need long arms and short legs.
The exact same driver experience, minus the beauty inside and out, could be had with my bimmer so I kept that, and my sciatica went away... Bigger trunk too, but we're not talking practicality now, are we ?

But if you have none, it's hard to resist the lure of the Alfa, it's a lovely car. They are a solid 10-15K over a similar condition bimmer though.
